Board 8 > Reminder that Warcraft 3 is an amazing game

If Warcraft 3 was just the custom map editor, it'd already be a great game. It's a very powerful and fairly easy to use tool which allows users to create all sorts of interesting maps. It led to DotA's creation, which in turn led to an entire genre of games! What other video game can claim that it allowed its players to create a separate genre?

But there's way more. There's also the campaign, which has a solid story, great characters, and good gameplay. There's the multiplayer, which has a rich metagame and is still often played today. You can also watch replays via the game's engine.

There's just so much this game offers. It's not one of my personal top favorites, but my god do I respect the hell out of this game.

Online was ok, but way too much emphasis on heroes. They were too important.

Custom maps were the peak. I made a top 25 custom maps with writeups a few years back. Enfos = best game in war3 customs (sorry dota fans, i do like dota though)

Wintermaul was a decent TD layout that spawned a lot of awesome themed variants.

I also really liked Element TD.


I also have very fond memories of intense Uther Party matches with b8ers.

StarCraft also created the "footman wars" style that wc3 often takes credit for with the smash bros style games.

Flying units were so OP in the 'continually spawning units' game types. You could put 1 unit on patrol and send the rest of your units to follow that one and eventually create a massive death ball of dozens and dozens of units that would all stack into one space. Then when you send in your lead unit it gets killed and the death ball unfolds.
