Because the series isn't about taking your time and relaxing. It's to challenge you, make you think, learn, be reactionary. You learn your lessons from dying and running back, learning how enemies fight

what does this have to do with pausing

like is someone gonna pause/unpause repeatedly super fast so it looks like everything is in slow motion?

Maybe this is the kind of thing you can't understand wothout playing the games but why not just, you know, not use it?

I've played lots of hard games and only a few times been tempted to pause spam. And at that, I've only ever done it for S ranks and such because you don't need it otherwise.

It's built around being played online and a pause function doesn't work out with online.

Making it available offline might encourage players to stay offline, depriving them of the experiences of messages, summons, invasions, etc.

An individual encounter in Souls games rarely last longer than 20 seconds. If you need to stop playing for a bit then just finish killing whatever enemy you're hitting and then run behind a wall and you're good.

Pausing offline wouldn't work because in theory the game is always online all the time. Because you could be invaded or summon or whatever. There is an offline mode but that gives an unfair advantage, you'd have people playing offline because they want to be able to pause, meaning less players online at any given time.

Also not having a pause button contributes to the feeling of never being completely safe.Just quit to the main menu or something if you have to.

They actually used to make controllers that would do it for you.

http://www.consolemate.com.au/v/vspfiles/photos/GCCTRLB-2.jpg

When you push the slow button, it would basically just spam pause until you pushed it again.

It didn't work very well for games of the GameCube generation, though, as those tended to have more complex pause menus than in some earlier generations, which is probably why they stopped making them. I had one because it was the only cube controller I could find without ordering online once when we had a bunch of friends over in college and wanted to play Smash Bros.

I only tried it a few times for the novelty of it. It actually really sucked trying to play a game that way.

But that's not the kind of pause spam I was talking about. I meant when I said pause spamming was in Mega Man Battle Network, trying to S-Rank Bomb Man when he throws a trillion bombs at once, you could pause and tske a second to figure out which bombs were about to explode where so you could actually dodge them. Getting hit once in that fight screwed you out of the S-Rank and the screen pretty much turned into an unreadable mess with the sheer quantity of bombs he threw at once.

Only other time was trying to S-Rank Leo in Mega Man Star Force, for pretty much the same reason. Turns ot the real key was actually to use the rainy cards instead of to focus quote so much on dodging, so it didn't actually end up helping that much.

a. Kill enemy and then remain where you're standing

b. Take a few seconds to retreat to a previous area where you killed enemies and remain where you're now standing

c. Take <2 seconds to exit back to main menu and then deal with a few more seconds to reload whenever you get done with what you needed to pause for

d. Play a different game and stop whining

Seems easy enough for me. The game is meant to be played online even if there is an offline option.

i bet Bloodborne 2 will have a feature like where you can't charge the controller while you play the game, and fans will defend it. They don't respawn if you don't reload though. Someone could kill an enemy and stand there for 6 hours if they had to go.

True. Another reason why pausing isn't really necessary.

There are very, very few areas where the do respawn though, but the player would be dumb to stand still there anyway. I'm thinking of the mosquito things in Blighttown and the rats during a DS2 boss fight.

You don't need a pause button. You just run back to the bonfire (without resting at it) assuming you've cleared the way and didn't just blast through everything.

You also just don't start a bonfire run when you're expecting to have obligations within the next 15 to 30 minutes.

A pause function is unnecessary. All it does is give the player too much freedom for what it's worth.
