I see games get trashed all the time for scummy DLC practices. Like Street Fighter V, Titanfall, Battlefront, heck even games that debatably do DLC well, like Injustice 2.

But what is it about Overwatch that gives it a pass? This is why I feel the GOTY awards some gave it was very undeserved. For whatever caused people to ignore the lack of modes, variety, and content at launch in general for Overwatch seems like the same crap getting people to flat out ignore these scummy decisions.

It'd be one thing if Overwatch were free, but it's not, and according to that article it would take nearly 300 lootboxes to get everything from this anniversary event, which is dumb.

I think its still pretty crazy that they get so little flak for event skins being 3x the credits of normal stuff AND time-locked to the event period but as a whole I'd much rather deal with Overwatch's "scummy" DLC practices than deal with a scheme that fragments the playerbase

Don't blow your coins on non-seasonal shit. I have 13k, I'll spend it on skins I want but didn't get on the last day.

The top of my list is:
1) Lucio
2) Bastion
3) DVa

Lucio skin is flippin awesome. The Bastion skin isn't fantastic, but it's the best skin he's ever received. I wouldn't want the event to pass by and not get that awesome skin. I have the police dva, and although I probably won't stray from that often, the rockabilly skin is really awesome.

How so? All of the lootboxes in that game are absolutely and easy as hell to grind for in mere minutes (sometimes in just a few seconds). The DLC pack is $40 but comes with a lot of content in addition to 9 new characters.

So yeah, not scummy at all. Sure as hell not bad as what Overwatch is doing. And Overwatch does it multiple times each year.

Anything from an Overwatch lootbox is cosmetic only and you can earn those. It's a grind, don't get me wrong but in exchange for buying the base game and having the cosmetic lootbox only system, all new CONTENT such as maps, modes and characters are completely free.

LC pack is $40 but comes with a lot of content in addition to 9 new characters.

The dlc was not only announced before launch (not THAT big of a deal imo) but it charges a hefty price for something that affects gameplay, especially in a comp based game.

I've put over 200 hours into the game at this point. I don't mind spending 20 bucks in an event. Still, I've been really lucky on this one. I got the Lucio skin in the free loot box that they give, then when I bought some, I got Hanzo, Pharah, Tracer, Symmetra (the best one), and some dance animations. Now I just need to grind for D.Va and I'm done.

This isn't scummy. You purchased a game and you get to play all the new stuff coming out for that game without having to make more than that initial purchase.

All the cosmetics are entirely optional and not required for anyone to enjoy playing the actual game.

All the cosmetics are entirely optional and not required for anyone to enjoy playing the actual game.

But it's still DLC. No different from a couple games I mentioned in the OP or all the people complaining about having to pay for costumes in SFIV and various other games.

Almost the exact same RNG lottery thing but with a $50 season pass that lets you play the free DLC maps in private matches.

That's actually a good point that supports exactly what I mean. Gears gets a ton of hate too even though the lootboxes are similar in nature. Even disregarding the DLC, I recall hearing a lot of hate in the lootbox inclusion in general.

Those 9 characters are still being developed and won't be released until God knows when. That alone tells you that the game we have now is a complete package. 30 characters, a full story mode, over 10 modes, and a leveling system with equipment and unlockable moves is a shitton more content than what a lot of other games will offer.

And the OW skins aren't just palette swaps. The fact that you're actively playing dumb makes your post seem even more like a shitpost.

this is limited run cosmetic changes that everyone has a chance at, either through grinding lootboxes or using saved up coins.

you dont need to pay for lootboxes, and they offer no advantage whatsoever to gameplay, since you can only get cosmetics

in other games there is generally no way to unlock anything except by buying it, even if it is cosmetic or adds something to the game, be it new weapons maps or characters.
