Horseshoe theory of politics. Forums are a great example--first you have the selection bias as both sides of extreme opinions are likely to congregate in anonymous places like here as opposed to public conduct. It's where you can let your freak flag fly high.

And because it's a smaller community, there is a false perception that these sentiments are common or widespread, which I think contributes to the further polarizing.

Try and point it out and both sides will immediately scream how the other is worse. They're both guilty of the same exact same thing, and it is hilarious to watch them dance around it. Severe case of myopia.

Admittedly, being a moderate myself doesn't lend myself to having my own political will expressed. You can't support a side without baggage. You can't escape the fact that money talks, or that the "powers that be" can limit free markets by means of total monopoly due to lack of governmental regulation OR artificially prop up barriers to competition through means of regulatory capture (i.e. using governmental regulation to protect your corporation's market share).

So you need to enact both conservative and liberal strategies depending on industry and depending on the leading powers within that industry. Some are too regulated, some aren't regulated enough, and whichever way the "power scale" is tipped, it needs to be tipped the other fucking way. Checks and balances.

But people will never agree on that, because we've essentially picked our teams "Playground Kickball style" and you can't be a liberal who is against gun control as proposed, or a conservative who agrees with a public option in health care.

At the end of the day, the moderates are cynical and the extremes are running the dog and pony show while both sides basically just speak to powers that are beneath the cries of us "plebs."
