I like the Switch, but to me at least it doesn't really fulfill the role of a dedicated portable system.

It's gonna continue on for a little while with a small handful of franchise games that were already in development and a slew of smaller third-party games, similar to the GBA after the DS was released.

haven't been touching my 3ds since I got my switch

Been playing my Switch on the trains here in Japan... and in classes even. I've had people come up to me and join me for multiplayer Mario Kart and such

The Switch just doesn't have the same portability as the 3DS. It just doesn't. You can't carry it in your pocket, and it just doesn't have the "whip it out and play it for 5 minutes while you're waiting for the train/class/etc" feel that the 3DS does.

That's why I said another aka something that isn't the 3DS, but isn't the Switch either.

None of these options work for me because I think the Switch will be the successor to the 3DS (as in, 3DS game developers will eventually move on to developing Switch games).

An ideal option here would be "Not yet, the 3DS has another year or two left before being succeeded by the Switch".

There will probably be Switch Mini revision down the line but that's largely not an issue since people don't need to carry these devices in pockets anymore. Not for 3DS XL, not for Vita, not for any tablets. Pocket space is already in competition with keys, phones, and wallets.

Nintendo's not creating an additional platform after merging all their production down to one for the Switch. That was the entire point, an additional platform just takes away from the Switch and the Switch would take away from the new platform. It would be a handheld that can't do what the Switch can, directly competing against a handheld that has Mario Kart 8 / Zelda / Splatoon / Mario Odyssey on it. Dead on Arrival doesn't come close to describing just how bad an idea it would be. There's no way to spin a competing platform as a good product, especially so now that Nintendo is gaining such presence on mobile anyhow and 3DS hasn't even been doing so hot. Meanwhile Switch has just been wrecking past Nintendo's expectations for demand.

Nintendo's not gonna cannibalize their 3DS though, if it can still give results they're going to push it as far as they can. But once it's over we're in the Switch Era.
