A few months ago my wife and I bought a house for around $40,000. It was on the edge of the city though and not really close to anything. So we decided that we would start looking for a second house and we would just rent out our current one to my wife's family.

The house we are buying is 3.8 million baht (about $110,000usd). Large 3 bedroom/3 bath house in a gated community. It's close to the airport, 5 minutes from the city centre and closer to work for both of us. Paid the down-payment less than an hour ago. Can't wait to be able to move in.

I'll post pics of the inside later, imgur is being slow as fuck right now. Took me over 5 minutes just to upload that one pic.

Probably around $350/month. Not much but we also got this house for a steal. There is no mortgage because we paid in cash so it'll just become an investment property. If the city continues to keep getting larger than we should be able to make a nice profit off it in the future.

Hat Yai, Songkhla. It's in the deep south of Thailand.

If/when we have another kid we might have that car park area turned into a 4th bedroom. We will still have enough space for parking in the front of it. We are also asking if they can make the balcony slightly bigger. It's pretty narrow now and it would be tight if I tried to fit a couple chairs out there, another 3 feet would be perfect.

that's probably not anywhere near normal rent for a house there, right?

because if it is, the €700/month i'm paying for a 30m^2 apartment is making me question my living situation

It's about average for something of similar quality that isn't in a gate community (the suburbs/gated communities here are much more expensive than everything else). Cost of living in Thailand is cheap. The place we were renting before was a small 2 bedroom townhouse (no living room though, well there was but it was a living room/car park as weirdly as that sounds). It wasn't very nice but it was livable and we paid $120/month.

Thanks. Things are going better than I'd have ever expected as early as 3 years ago. Thailand has been treating me very well.

If our family ends up getting bigger, we will likely turn that over hang area into a 4th bedroom. Won't give us as much parking space but it would be worth it and wouldn't cost very much to do.

I know Thailand is cheap, but still, you are likely earning their currency from your work.

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but your house is sideways. You really should have hired a home inspector to catch issues like this.

I'm a teacher and I do a bit of tutoring on the side. My wife has her own small clothing store. We bought the 1st house with cash from both of our savings. We don't have a bunch of cash at the moment but we make more than enough to pay all the bills and still have some savings. Foreign teachers here make 2-3x more than Thai teachers do. My wifes wage is well above average as well.

Pretty much. This same house in Edmonton where I lived prior would be 3-4x more expensive at least. I doubt I would have ever been able to own 2 homes at once while living in Canada.

It's similar in the Philippines, at least when I've visited and looked around. You can find similarly beautiful homes like what MuayThai85 bought, for roughly the same price and in nice neighborhoods. The difference is I didn't see any jobs that would pay you so muvh better than what the locals were getting. If you have Western currency like US dollars, it can go a long way. There are a bunch of retired Western expats enjoying their lives their now.

Yea houses like these are well out of the price range of the average Thai but they are getting a much larger middle class now compared to the Philippines so more and more people are starting to be able to afford nicer houses.

Teaching wages as a foreigner aren't great but we make a lot more than the Thais. Wages here are also higher for Filipinos. Lots of Filipino teachers here because of that. They make about 40% less than white foreigners but still make at least 50% more than the Thais.

Great region to retire if you got a pension and shit coming in every month. You can live like a king on $2,000/month.
