Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete Ghaleon was quite the stinker. In the PS1 version at least. Two attacks per round plus an instant death attack. To top it off, the inventory wasn't shared and each character only got to hold five items, four for Alex since he had his Ocarina.

Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete And the sequel gives us a final boss even more challenging than Ghaleon in the form of Zophar. While Ghaleon was just a single fight, Zophar was broken into four back to back fights, with the third being the most challenging. Thankfully Lunar 2 had a big, shared inventory and the ability to swap the useful dragon spells at will with the crests. That said, Zophar's third phase included five targets, each of which could attack each turn. And there was still a risk of an instant death attack. Wow.

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door I actually did find the Shadow Queen to be challenging. Her second form had good HP and if you were unprepared, her attacks could kill you fast. I eventually learned that Vivian was pretty helpful.

TTYD had such a good end game sequence. My first time going through Grodus to immediately fight bowser I died so hard. And then the last fight was just awesome.

I was going to say phase 1 of the Vigoor Emperor in Ninja Gaiden, but I completely forgot that Murai is after him, which disqualifies him. Regardless, I've never actually figured out the particulars of that phase and got by purely by shenanigans on Master Ninja.

I suppose I'll throw in Vergil 3 on DMD as a stock answer unless I come up with something else.

I honestly can't remember any final boss I've ever had trouble with aside from Zeromus in Final Fantasy 4. Somehow that fight remains consistently difficult even having done it before and preparing for it.

At least, it was still difficult in the DS/Steam version.

Arc the Lad Twilight of the Spirits took me like 45 minutes to beat the final boss. What a pain in the ass.

Nioh- Tachibana Muneshige, (the "real" one)

Demon's Souls- Flamelurker or Firelurker or whatever. One of the hardest bosses ever for me and the hardest one in the Souls games I've played. At least straight up melee'ing him. He was a bit easier when I switched to ranged

Also from Demon's Souls The two gargoyle guys on the narrow bridge. Don't remember the name

EDIT: Totally glanced over the "final" part in the topic title lol. These aren't final bosses. They were harder than the final bosses in their respective games to me however

I thought the Final Boss from Final Fantasy Legend 2 was hard, but even harder was the boss right before him Apollo who, after getting his ass beat for a while just goes full on meltdown mode, casts flare every single turn--the good news is you just have to out-heal his damage when he starts this as he'll eventually just die on his own. The bad news is it's a lot of fucking damage.

The Taniwha enemy was also pretty fucking hard and it's a boss in its own rite but it's a random encounter so I guess doesn't really count.

But the final boss in FFL2 has got some really nasty attacks.

Phantasy Star II - Mother Brain

Didn't have the Visiphone (hidden save anywhere item) so I had to go through the whole dungeon each try. Tough as nails.

Also I always expect Culex (Super Mario RPG hidden boss) to be a lot tougher than he actually is. But pretty much once you max your levels and get all the best items it's a pretty straight shot.

I beat that boss first try on crushing but realized I had to play that chapter last to get the crushing trophy so when I replayed it, I couldn't beat it for the life of me.

First one to come to mind was the True Conqueror from the Last Remnant. That bastard took quite a bit.

This will sound pathetic, but I legitimately couldn't beat Bowser in Super Mario 64 as a kid. Every time the platform broke into a star, I wasn't able to throw him into a bomb.

Ugh, yeah. He was a pain in the ass.

Uncharted 4's final boss on crushing and Golden Abyss's final boss in general were much worse though imo. 4's was an extended QTE with practically impossible queues, while GA's was another long QTE with bullshit touch controls.

I ended up cheating in UC4 by constantly pausing before his attacks.

If DLC counts, Orphan of Kos from Bloodborne.

Myrmidon dragon transformation makes you immune to all the status effects the final boss does. Use it and you basically auto-attack way to victory.

It was a Shang Tsung, Kintaro and Shao Kahn gauntlet. Shao Kahn was stupidly strong. I remember I got to the point where I could beat Shang Tsung and Kintaro without taking damage but then I would get destroyed against Kahn.

The final mission in Advance Wars Dark Conflict/Days of Ruin.
Gogmazios in Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate since I insisted on soloing it with High Rank armor.
If DLC bosses count, then the final one from the Dark Souls 2 DLC Crown of the Ivory King.

Interestingly I don't think you could overlevel in Lunar 1. If I remember correctly, bosses power up each time Alex levels up, so even the first boss will always be challenging even if you grind.

I think it capped at like level 60, though.
