The Trump administration has proposed a $238 million cut to a federally-funded job training program for low-income youths, raising fears among educators that several centers will have to close. There are 125 Job Corps education centers across the U.S. and in Puerto Rico. Each of them is a place where disadvantaged students ages 18 to 24 can get free job training and access to industry internships — as well as the kind of support and mentoring many need but didn’t find in their homes or traditional schools.

Some 60,000 students enroll each year to be trained for work in 11 high-growth industries, including health care, information technology, advanced manufacturing, finance and business. Started in 1964, Job Corps training has expanded from a pathway to a high school diploma and vocational trade to a 21st-century road to college and a variety of degrees. For students that qualify, that higher education is also offered for free.

I suppose cutting Job Corps is not as big of a blow as long as they retain employment training programs for people on public assistance. BFET basically requires every single adult without dependents to enter government-provided employment training or get kicked off food stamps. Depending on career direction, that training can even lead to college education largely paid for. And by the time your government funds run out leaving you to pay for the rest of your tuition, you should have an established job with advancing potential by that time anyway. From what I've heard TANF, which is provided for needy families, operates similarly in it's requirement for continued job training and opportunities for college assistance.

The goal of the programs is to offer public assistance long enough to get you off of it, while leaving you in a better employment situation.


Job Corps generally was not much more than that, while providing campus facilities in some locations which an unfortunate number of applicants just used as flop houses until booted from the program. I mean if the production numbers were not meeting the worth of the expense...it should be no surprise if heads of government decided "yeah this isn't really working, we need to try something else to be more cost effective".


However, if Trump and his minions are simply deciding to cut everything that assists the underprivileged without leaving alternatives, then we are truly screwed as a country.

Well does anyone here actually have any knowledge about this program and how effective it actually is? I found these stats from this website that says they should just eliminate the program because it is a waste of taxpayers money.

Compared to non-participants, Job Corp participants were less likely to earn a high school diploma (7.5 percent versus 5.3 percent);

Compared to non-participants, Job Corp participants were no more likely to attend or complete college;

Four years after participating in the evaluation, the average weekly earnings of Job Corps participants were a mere $22 higher than the average weekly earnings of the control group; and

Employed Job Corps participants earned only $0.22 more in hourly wages compared to employed control group members.

I looked at the actual study they pulled these from and found them there, but also there were other conclusions that were favorable towards the program. But I don't really care enough or have the time to go through them.

the missile defense shield? it's a trillion dollar system that isn't meant to actually work well enough to protect civilians against the likes of russia or china, the countries that could actually wipe us out.

its purpose is to protect strategic assets just long enough for them to launch their own nuclear devices and effectively neutralize first strike doctrines.

which is kind of silly because Russia and China don't have first strike doctrines.

Haha. I wouldnt be apposed, but definitely not for it. Definitely don't cut my pay that would suck. I didnt join foe the money, it was a nice icing i learned about later on.

Some of the stuff like MREs are crazy expensive to purchase yourself, so hopefully they're not to expensive to make. What's BS is when someone tries to break contract and leave, but Army holds them here having them do nothing, but eat. Thats a waste of money. Those guys are in their rooms playing video games.

I could get jobs easily after graduating High School, got a $12 an hour job with plenty of overtime. I was let go after a year and quickly found a $14 an hour job without schooling. Minimum here is $8 an hour.
