It's to make sure that candidates who only appeal to big cities don't get elected.

Also to encourage the Democratic party to pick better nominees. We got two terms of Obama out of the EC. Just don't nominate shittier candidates than Obama and Dems win.

As opposed to candidates who only appeal to a couple of swing states getting elected? Don't see how that's any better, at least the big cities actually have people living in them

The electoral college

Making it so the vote of a farmer in the middle of nowhere is worth several times more than the vote of a person in a major city

Also the winner take all aspect is terrible and not representative of the population even within those middle of nowhere farm towns.

Why would California get to decide everything?

First off, California is not a hive-mind. If we got rid of the current system, the Republicans living in it might actually vote since their vote would actually be counted. Second, California has 12% of the US population. That is not enough to win an election. If everyone votes against what California wants, that 12% won't be worth anything at all.

Since they have 12% of the population, they deserve 12% of the vote weight. Simple as that.

I wish this false narrative would fucking die. Big cities would have the exact same number of popular votes as they would EC votes. The only difference would be that areas with lower populations would actually see their votes COUNT all of a sudden

For instance, large cities in CA basically control all of CA's electoral votes. Under a standard election, rural areas would actually see better representation since their votes would go to the candidate of their choice rather than whoever the rest of the state decided should should be president.

This is blatantly false. Cali has roughly 10% of the EC vote and would have roughly 10% of the popular vote. Going with a standard election would actually make Cali control LESS of the election since their votes would be divided up rather than all going to one candidate

If the election were based on a popular vote, the parties would all have had different campaign strategies so we don't know for sure who would have won under those circumstances.

I still agree with a popular vote over an EC vote. States still have the house and senate representatives they vote for, for state issues. I'm just saying that a popular vote wouldn't have meant a Gore or Hillary win if those were the established rules.

The USA would fall apart if California was suddenly gone. All of those fly over states depend on California. Everything from America's best technologies to massive agriculture, it is the most important state in or union and SHOULD be a deciding factor on who becomes president.

Just shows the importance of electoral college. Look if your person won you wouldnt be complaining. Overall this stuff is overtalked to the point of death, plus take into count that campaigning would have been treated differently as well. Either way, both parties knew the rules of the game before it started. Its like someone playing twister then saying "now that i lost, it's bs that the random spinner landed on blue." Once you switch it over then someone you want to win, loses the pop vote, but wins the elect... you'll be and we'll be back to square one.
