So easy if you're not a manchild. Did it on a $800-$1000 a month income in LA county when I was 23.

Man that first few months without mom was blissful even though I ate nothing but egg and chicken and slept in a sleeping bag.

you should be relatively familiar with "everyday adult activities" like cooking, cleaning up after yourself, doing laundry, etc, right? so really the only addition you have here is the financial responsibility. i understand that can be daunting. if you're nervous about having/saving enough money, make yourself a budget.

it takes getting used to but in the end it's not that bad once you have a routine going and you have a grasp on the tasks necessary to maintain your household. there will be lots of little everyday activities that need to get done that you may not have always done with your parents, and you'll find out there are a lot of little things you never even considered that have to be done, like changing lightbulbs, buying new hand soap, etc. you'll also feel poor all the time; i never realized how much money I was saving living at home until I moved out and discovered that EVERYTHING in life costs money

yeah, and moving into your own place for the first time has so many expenses you just don't think about, like trash cans, brooms, soap dispensers, kitchen utilities, etc.

At least while your parents are alive, you can tell yourself that you've still got a safety net in a worst-case scenario. After they're gone you have to be totally self-reliant, and that's kind of scary too until you get used to it.

I don't know.

After Taxes: That's $681.59 weekly for one person. For both that's $1363.18 weekly or $5452.72/month. Their rent is $2700. That's almost exactly 50% of their income on rent. That is a really bad decision.

This. You either better have a chance of getting a pretty substantial promotion to where you are spending 1/3 to 1/4 on rent soon or you are asking for trouble. I'd look to move somewhere else if gay doesn't happen soon.

I'm not shitting you too when I said I could live in a palace too around here, and if I lived out of town in the country I could build a huge house for that much and have a decent amount of land too. You can finance a half-million dollar home for that much, think about that for a second. I mean I know a half-mil doesn't go as far in Cali, but fuck that is a lot to spend on an apartment anywhere IMO.

I know there has to be cheaper rent outside of the city

As others described, it doesn't matter. When you budget, there is always a limit to what you will spend any given time. That gives the sensation of feeling broke. "Well, I already spent my allotted $XX on entertainment this month. I have to wait until next month to go see that new movie."

Budgeting gives my money freedom. I know what I must pay for, and I can set aside extra money to do whatever I want. Because of budgeting, I've been able to visit Australia, New Zealand, and Peru, all within the last year, and I don't even make that much money. I have plenty in savings, and emergency fund, and I have retirement accounts.

I feel like 95% of Americans are clueless when it comes to handling money. There's no reason that the average person with an average job shouldn't be able to feel like they have more than enough money, if they're handling it properly.

Also, I think another part of it is that people need to learn to live within their means.

I drive a 2003 Corolla that I've had for nearly 12 years. My wife drives a 2006 Civic that she got from Craigslist for $3,000. We live in a small apartment. We don't drink Starbucks every day. We don't eat out every day. Too many people are not well disciplined, and are impulsive. Money can go down the drain very quickly if you're not vigilant.

For most people, living on a budget gives you the sensation of feeling broke because money is earmarked.

Budgeting shouldn't make you feel broke. It should make you feel like you have more money, because you know where it's going, and you're keeping yourself from wasting money on stupid crap. A budget allows a person to pinpoint what they really want to spend their money on, get that target in their sights, and then save for it. When you finally are able to purchase whatever it is, it can be very rewarding.

A budget, though restrictive, ultimately leads to financial freedom. And it's a really simple thing to do.

I think maybe the issue is that people are too focused on the here-and-now. They're not looking ahead to the future, where all of their restraint and hard work will pay off. It doesn't even take that long to start reaping the rewards of being frugal for a while.

Right, my budgeting isn't figuring out what my necessities are and the rest is fun money, its figuring out how much I bring in and where all of it goes. So I have a set amount for the various bullshit I buy, and once my money goes into savings its got to be pretty damned important for me to take it out of savings for other than its intended use, such as when I got pinhole leaks in my plumbing.

Because I account for every dollar I earn and I try to avoid lifestyle creep, I make 6 figures and feel broke all the time. Because I want to buy tons of shit but I "can't". I'd say it's more because I know how to handle money that I feel broke all the time, if I didn't manage my money I could spend willy nilly and not feel broke.
