Team Mudkip by far. Neater design, nicer movepool, etc. It's one of the best starters in the franchise given its solid mix between special and physical attacks.

The way the voting was set up (basically random battles) prevented Squirtle from being in the finale unless he could get past charmander and he could not

I think we're splitting hairs here.. yellow is a gen one game.. at least it only has first gen pokemon. No other gen has four starters, and yellow is clearly the most different of the third game in each gen.

When people talk about the gen one starters, they're usually referring to Bulby CharChar and Squirty.

However, it is the game that set the precedent for each gen to have a third game after the first two that is a more complete game, and it is considered a main game in the series. It's not Pokemon stadium or mystery dungeon, it is a main colored game.

If you want to say Pikachu is a gen one starter you can, but I have never considered him to be one. He is a special case, which makes sense because he is pikachu. He is different than all other Pokémon. He is the face of the franchise.

I don't really have to concede anything. Pikachu is different because he's Pikachu. He's the only one with a main game specifically dedicated to him. Yellow, special Pikachu edition.

Emerald has more differences than Yellow.

EDIT: Crystal, Emerald, and Platinum all have actual substantial story changes actually, and I'm confident Emerald and Platinum have more changes and content in general. Crediting that kind of stuff to Yellow being special is funny.

...it's nothing like that, terrible analogy. Bulbasaur is still a gen one pokemon, remakes or inclusion in later games don't change that. If you want to muddy things up with remakes and stuff, instead of quoting generations we could instead call them regional starters. In any event Pikachu still fits with Bulbasaur Charmander and Squirtle.

The conversation moved to what makes Yellow special. Besides Pikachu, the criteria presented applies to those later third games I listed, or in other words they don't make Yellow special. All it has to stand on is Pikachu, which isn't enough of a separation from Red and Blue to make it it's own generation or category.

EDIT: I asked my brother what he thinks and he said Yellow is generation 1.5. Lord help that child.

He's not entirely wrong since Yellow had some backend mechanical fixes and sprite changes. Normal third-versions of the games don't do that (although spinoffs -- like LG and SS -- do).
