Couldn't they have gone the more traditional route of numbering them 1, 2, and 3? Is calling the last world "world 8" designed to make the game seem longer?

This joke isn't as clever or funny as it was in your head when you first thought it up.

So you always take the warp zone? That's the joke I guess.

EDIT: Speaking of which, on Super Mario Maker 3DS there's a creative level made by Nintendo where it starts on the end of 1-1 (with the two tubes), you play 1-2, but you can go down ALL THREE of the warp pipes. 2, 3, 4. Obviously it's just like a screen of each level (2,3,4-1), but it was a really fun level to play.

I giess for the same reason Microsoft numbered their Xboxes 1, 360, One or their Operating Systems 1, 2, 3, 95, 98, 2000, ME, Vista, 7, 8, 10.

admittedly, that was mostly because they couldn't call the 360 the Xbox 2, because then I'd be competing with the Playstation 3 and the layman would ask themselves "so the Xbox 2 is one generation behind the PS3?"

It's cause the fourth world is 4 times better then the first, but they started running out of steam, so world 8 is only twice as good as 4.

Which makes sense* but now the X1 is three generations behind PS4.

*but not as much as "Super Xbox" or "Xbox Ultra" or something

The first Xbox wasn't "1", it was just Xbox.

"360" and "One" also have nothing to do with numerical succession.

But it's not the number 1, it's the word One. And regardless, companies almost never give the first of their products a 1.
