The headset requires TWO devices: Your switch and a smartphone connected to the internet to access voice services. It connects to your Switch and your phone, mixes audio, and then gives you the audio while letting you talk to friends as long as they have your friend code probably. Critics say it's overcomplicated and makes it feel like back in the day when people needed separate voice chat apps like Skype or Ventrilo to chat w/ friends while gaming, but others say it's a good system because who doesn't have a phone anyway? It also solidifies the switch as a home console because who's going to pack all that stuff with them just to game online w/ voice in the subway? It's a risky move by Nintendo. But will it pay off in the end? Let's see what people think.
