I loved this game, but for such good gameplay it sure doesn't want to let you play the fucking game. I hate games like this.

Yeah should have clarified. Not even like Metal Gear where there are a lot of cutscenes and many of them are long, but like a minute long cutscene, one or two 20 second gunfights, another cutscene. Repeat through pretty much the whole game

This was exactly my impression when I tried to "play" the game. It baffles me how people praised it

It's a very story heavy game so yes, there will be cutscenes. The gameplay is only average at best. It's not what made it great.

one of my favorite games from last gen, but yea, it's one of the most cutscene heavy titles that I've ever played.

it also has the best shooting mechanics, though.

I mean I don't even like Uncharted, but at least it allows you play the game for more than a minute at a time, I still like this game, but God damn.

Well you should have done some research for a 5 year old game first.

Or you could just enjoy it for what it is instead of being a baby who compulsively skips cutscenes.

Sounds like an excuse to you, but having competent writing would enhance the experience. At least pay attention to the story instead of just accentuating the negatives.

When you do replays, unskippable cutscenes can be a pain. Still a great game. 1 will always be my favorite though. It has that charm that the others. I think it's the right mix of seriousness and goofiness that makes it charming to me. The stereotypical mob guys still make me laugh.

Oh shit, you're right! Looking at all the game reviews, they all say that this is in fact a MOVIE and not a GAME! How did I miss this? Good thing I have my time machine that I used to purchase a 5 year old game in 2013. DERP.

What a shitty post.

"Don't need to see the same cutscenes again because I already beat the game!"

Yeah I'm sure you have photographic memory and picked up on everything the first time around.

There's also the fact that the cutscenes give vital context to what you're doing in gameplay and overall enhance the experience.

Also pretty sure you can skip cutscenes when you've died.

My problem isn't that there are a lot of cutscenes, Metal Gear is my favorite series FYI. But that the cutscenes are interspersed in a way that it breaks up the gameplay so much that it feels like gameplay isn't an actual important factor to the game.

Easier said than done, especially with the number of enemies they throw at you at once

That final airport segment took me almost an hour

Max Payne 3 is a fun game but I think it's more than fair to say the pacing was really choppy for an action game. I liked the story, but MP1 and MP2 were also story heavy yet still contained a much more proportionate amount of gameplay-to-story.

That, and maybe it was because I was playing on 360, but the game had a serious problem with letting you skip scenes you'd already seen. You would sometimes have to wait 30 seconds to a minute into the scene before it allowed you to do so

2 was good, but it was way too easy. I made it through the hardest setting only dying a couple of times and not even using the bullet time ability. Not only that, but the plot, writing, and characters were considerably weaker. Max's narration didn't have that noir grit that the first one had, where he would describe things with colorful similes like "the snow came down like confetti on the devil's parade." The chemistry between Max and Mona was also pretty much non existent in the sequel. In the first game it was fun seeing their interactions because of the interesting combination of Max's dry deadpan humor with Mona's playful sass. In MP2 they just both seemed to be brooding and miserable. There wasn't any fun banter or a coy rivalry between frenemies, it was just a generic forced romance.

This

I can see why TC would have those problems. Some shooting segments were short. So you would trigger a cutscene, clear a room, trigger cutscene.

However the shootouts get larger later in the game, and I loved the story/Paynes dialog through it all.

So yeah I think it is my favorite tps. I also feel MP1/2 are some of the most overrated games ever made.

it was such a pretentious game to showcase rockstar's pseudo-hollywood skills.

the cutscenes were designed to be unskippable(including through mods) because they were integrated in the game engine or something.

the fact that they hid their pretentious design behind a bs loading icon just makes it that much worse.
eg. the first time you boot up the game you're forced to watch the entire thing(with loading icon) but every subsequent boot lets you skip straight to the menu.

I've got to disagree with all of this.

the narrative in MP2 seemed to have a tighter focus, since it centered around a few key characters, and the infighting between two factions made for a more engaging story, IMO.

in MP, there were a lot of meaningless references (paraphrasing: he was like Kaiser Soze, but worse), and the writing could be a lot more sloppy and/or pretentious.

IIRC, Lake took a script writing class after MP and it shows in MP2.
