Finished 2x02 and... that was probably one of the weaker episodes in some time. Calling the fart cloud a fart wasn't that funny (the moon men song was entirely lacking), and Morty's taking the lead (and getting burned) a second time doesn't resonate nearly as strongly. Jerry's sideplot in the universal Jerry Day Care is slightly funny (hilarious at first), but quickly devolves into fairly blah humor. I think we could have used a lot more Beth and Summer.

My favorite two gags:

* The 'Roy' life simulation video game. It's not that amazing in and of itself, but when Rick starts playing it and draws a crowd... incredible.

* Gazorpafield on TV - it lives!

Alright, watched 2x03. Very solid episode.

In the A-plot, the body-snatching entity Unity captures Rick/Morty/Summer - but the good (?) news is that Unity is an ex of Rick's. My favorite part of this isn't a straightforward gag, but rather the hilarious way that it subverts expectations. Unity is a goddamn hivemind enslaving an entire alien race, and Morty/Summer (much moreso the latter) try to free the race. But they wind up siding with Unity, and when they tell Rick to break it off... it's for Unity's sake. Hilarious.

It's also one of the best Rick episodes. The getting super-stoned and the variety of weird sex (only hinted at) are kind of funny, but it's the emotional moments that strike unexpectedly stronger. Hammered out of her mind, Unity decides that it'd be fun to demonstrate her powers by leveling an entire distant city. With no kids watching, Rick - who's been in full party mode - actually panics. And he explains why - he thinks his grandkids are in that city. Great scene. And it's also awesome when he wakes up to find himself dumped in his sleep - he's too irresistible in person - with the message that he'll never change. The ending is Rick's 1x06 ending, except that it strikes way realer because of the already present weight/buildup during the episode. It's not about the fling being over - it's about what that means about him as a person.

On the other side of things, Jerry and Beth get into a huge fight over the alien trapped in the basement. They wind up speculating (largely rhetorically) over the alien's nature and Rick's purposes with it, a point of conflict that they agree sheds more light on their own rocky relationship than on Rick or the alien. Of course, the alien breaks free, complaining about the argument... and validating almost all the hypotheticals that Beth/Jerry toss out (Rick is trying to cure cancer; the alien is evil; but Rick is curing cancer for profit, the like). The speech interpreting device is awesome (as is the fact that the alien return to grab it before leaving).

---

* Rick immediately infers that the body-snatcher is among those in the seemingly abandoned spaceship that he and the kids board. Indeed, Unity infests the others who are attempting to explain the problem immediately. 'Called it,' he says, obviously unimpressed.

* 2x03 features more cross-storyline references than a typical episode, which is great. Jerry argues that Rick sometimes forgets the word 'human' - and later that same episode, Rick struggles before remembering the word. Rick also mutters that he needs to get home in case Beth/Jerry discover the alien in his secret underground lair.

* I love the stupid joke that the friend-zoned entity is named 'Beta.'

one thing I speculated about is that it's not just the break up with unity but also the really harsh reaction he gets from beth and jerry when he returns home. another thing that kinda crossed my mind. so the alien he was keeping in the basement was for curing some kind of space aids, right? but jerry and beth released it. which means Rick will no longer be able to find the cure. seems like he'd be pretty bummed about that as well. this got me thinking about the frozen creature he takes out and kills with the machine before trying to kill himself. so it was put into stasis for some reason and starts screaming and crying in pain once unfrozen, then Rick puts it out of its misery. it could be that he was planning on eventually curing this creature but since the alien he was experimenting on was freed this is no longer an option, and he felt it was more humane to kill the little thing.

when I brought this up before someone told me it was wrong and the creature was one of the kronenburgs from the world that Rick abandoned. I guess if that line of thinking is more true that is also pretty interesting. you can kinda go down the same road and think that Rick was still holding out hope that he'd be able to cure the kronenburg world, but it seems like he eventually just gave up.

I personally thought he was just warming up the machine before using it on himself.

The Kronenburg theory doesn't really jive with me because I don't think animals were infected by the potion and that thing was way to small to have previously been human.

I do like the idea that it was a subject for him to test the cure he was working on though!

2x04 is definitely one of my favorite 'no-emotions' episodes so far. It also feels like a manic blend of a handful of Community's most memorable high concept episode archetypes. The Bottle Episode is established the moment Rick puts the house on lockdown. (Beth demands to know why the house has such a feature - 'You don't want to know how many answers there are to that question.') Identify the Traitor is another classic trope that's not making its first Dan Harmon appearance. But perhaps the most unique - and the most ridiculous among Community - is the false memories-driven plot. Because we're in a sci-fi cartoon world, we can go full-on bonkers with it, and it's great.

I've pointed out that this is a no-emotions episode, but the epiphany is still sensible, both dark and heartwarming. The method of storytelling is cartoonish and exaggerated for hilarity, but real relationships aren't perfect, and it's worth examining those relationships that might seem to be, while appreciating those that have caused us pain.

Tons of good gags listed below, but perhaps the most enduring running joke is that Mr. Poopybutthole is a fucking hilarious character. Love how he hijacks the opening credits. What happens at the end is fairly predictable, but no less funny for it. And the episode inexplicably ends with Beth's (previously only hinted-at) alcoholism flaring up. And the post-credits scene of rehab, with everyone dead serious about this incredibly unserious character, is just killer good.

---

* 'I don't like you putting your GENES in my GRANDCHILDREN.' I love the Rick-Jerry-Beth relationships.

* On calling the fire department: 'You know they won't come here anymore.'

* 'Summer - I've always loved you!' / 'Yup.' *zap*

* The memory of Rick wanting to buy limited edition 3DSes and sell them at elevated prices is so out of nowhere.

* Pencilvester A++ name.

* 'Thanks, ghost in the jar. You always were good at explaining possibly obscure cultural references.'

* 'You're a parasite.' / 'Yeah, but you're real.'

2x04 is my favorite episode. Glad to see you enjoyed it!

One if my favorite moments is how Rick actually has trouble killing Pencilvestyr. Shows just how powerful the parasites are. Even once you know they are real it's still difficult to overcome them. Jerry's reaction is far less subtle but I love the nuance of the fact that even Rick has trouble turning on his new imaginary best friend.

2x05 wasn't very good. Best part of it by a giant margin is Ice T's 'arc.' (That's also not Ice-T voicing him, is it?) His transforming into literal ice is the most inexplicably hilarious thing to happen. Actually, no, everything he does is the most inexplicably hilarious thing to happen in the episode, including when he returns to save the Earth by shielding the blast, and the post-credits scene where he returns home, only to have his father shot... and then goes guns akimbo into an action movie promo.

The episode is generally laden down with unfunny characters - the president, the math teacher, Principal Vagina, whose kind-of-funny name belies an aggressively boring character in boring settings (the church/cult village). Gags like the peaceable planet being eradicated are incredibly predictable and don't really bring any humor to the table. Rick's 'music' isn't particularly funny or enjoyable. And unfortunately the Giant Heads... don't really do much. They look fucking hilarious, but that's about all the good I can say for it. The monotonous voice is kinda funny the first time, but nothing gets added to it. Feels like a lot of wasted potential, and Summer getting inducted into a cult doesn't do anything for me.

The stereotypical warmongering general archetype is slightly funnier, and Bird Person brings some of his awkward stiltedness as minor reprieve. (Bird Person feels like he would be the worst character in a good episode, but he's been one of the best characters in two fairly 'meh' episodes. Weird how that works.)

So... fun fact: my episodes do not have titles attached to them, so I thought that 2x05 was 'The Ricks Must Be Crazy' or whatever, because of the giant heads being thought to be gods. I was feeling a huge sinking sensation in my stomach when I did the writeup, because AFAIK, that episode is considered to be one of the best. Glad that it turns out this was not that episode! It's fun that I can go in without knowing the episode titles, and therefore not know what to expect.

it has a lot in common with what tend to be my least favorite bits and episodes in R&M. stuff like going after the low hanging fruit of religion and making jokes that have probably been made hundreds of times before. I guess I generally expect more out of this show so when they go after such obvious material it feels like a disappointment. it's definitely a step up over the women-only world I complained about earlier in this topic. especially in the sense that they at least give it a wacky twist and some original jokes (like everything being potato based). but at the core I didn't find the story compelling or entertaining.

2x06 is an awesome episode top to bottom.

And I mean that in the sense that the opening seconds and the final frames are both similarly fantastic. The episode begins with Morty asking about a 'quantum carburetor,' to which Rick responds dismissively - 'You can't just add a sci-fi word to a car part and expect it to mean anything. Well, looks like it's the microverse battery.' Cue the duo entering, the opening credits, and Morty asking about what's going on as we return to the duo. Rick is annoyed. 'Remember eight seconds ago?'

And dat ending, too. The main episode concludes Summer's epic 'keep Summer safe' sideplot with the ship literally brokering a peace deal between psychic spiders and humans... but this ruins the dimension's famous ice cream, as it now has flies in it to make it more palatable to those spiders. (Love the casual use of alternate dimensions for ridiculous stories like this.) And then we go the the credits on a high note... after which we're in class, and Morty suddenly explodes into a car, paying off one of the most ridiculously out-there gags earlier in the episode.

And that's just the opening and closing frames. The center of it concerns a hilarious story about a creation attempting to surpass its creator, with that scientist losing not to Rick's intellect, but simply being lower on the pyramid scheme. Which is what it is - Morty (and subsequently smaller-universe scientists) appeal to the idea that the method of creating electricity and paying it upward is slavery. To me, it's pretty clearly a pyramid scheme. Only problem is, the better the technology in a middle tier, the more likely the higher-up gets cut out. And that's a problem. A hilarious problem.

'Keep Summer Safe' delivers, as well. I'm actually reminded of 1x05, where an already awesome A-plot is supplemented by a possibly even better B-plot. The best line here, aside from the ending, has to be the sassy response to Summer's 'You know you're kind of a dick, right?' - 'My function is to, keep, Summer, safe. It's not keep Summer, like, totally stoked about, like, the general vibe, and stuff. That's you. That's how you talk.'

---

* Seeing Rick react to himself is great. As well as Morty taking the chances to pull a few over on Rick: 'I dropped out of school. It's not a place for smart people,' says the microverse scientist. / Morty: 'Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, snap!'

* The Miniverse scientist has an existential crisis (leading to his suicide), and Morty's only way to connecting on that level (despite having had existential crises of his own) - talking about how weird science is, like when Rick shot him through the hand!

* 'Ever heard of Triple A, motherfucker!'

* That's a myth! Why are you trying to start a myth?! / It's called culture. Someone has to start it.

* 'If this works, drinks are on me.' / 'If drinks are on you, you're gonna need a second mortgage on that tower. I'm an alcoholic.' / 'Opium addict.' (both laugh)

* The random guy who realizes that if he's manufactured, then maybe he should ask out that woman he's been pining over... and she just flatly shuts him down. What a low-effort, hilarious gag.

* 'Strap these things on, you need to look like an alien.' / 'Why???' / 'Ugh, you clearly know nothing about car repair.'
