No official connection (yet) to the Trump administration, but with Rogers testifying Wednesday and Comey Thursday, it's gonna be an interesting leak.

I'm limited by the 80 char limit, but the gist is we have an actual NSA document to look through. The Intercept is known to distrust the NSA, so if they're publishing this, it's almost assuredly genuine. But yes, it probably won't be announced publicly til Wednesday if Rogers decides to go ahead and do so.

That's...not the impression I got from reading the article.
The report indicates that Russian hacking may have penetrated further into U.S. voting systems than was previously understood. It states unequivocally in its summary statement that it was Russian military intelligence, specifically the Russian General Staff Main Intelligence Directorate, or GRU, that conducted the cyber attacks described in the document:

Russian General Staff Main Intelligence Directorate actors … executed cyber espionage operations against a named U.S. company in August 2016, evidently to obtain information on elections-related software and hardware solutions. … The actors likely used data obtained from that operation to … launch a voter registration-themed spear-phishing campaign targeting U.S. local government organizations.

It's okay, a lot of people are full of shit and talk out of their ass because of it.

We do use computers of sorts, but elections are not done with internet connections and cloud storage (not that I have ever heard of). They are offline machines that use chips and other means to tally votes so they can't be hacked like an online database or something similar.

Edit: to note, I'm being somewhat vague because I dont know all the details myself. I know that states use different means to record and tally votes. I know that some places do use computers compared to other means such as paper ballots.

Ummm... I don't know what you are trying to say. Pogo linked an article that discusses the different styles of voting accepted in the US and that basically speaks to what I said. However, I think the recent revelation about Russia is concerning their ability to tamper with voting by hacking into other systems that do not directly affect or write ballots, such as voter rolls that are held in a state database.

No, it means something like "russians posted pro-trump memes on reddit" and "russians shared fake news on facebook". That counts as interfering with the election, it's why we've had 4 months of this bullshit with no concrete explanation on what they actually did.

A voter roll is simply a list of voters. Probably contains basic information like address, date of birth, etc. so they can compare it to something like your ID when you go to vote.

States have all sorts of different measures because of "MUH STATE RIGHTS" and other various reasons. It could be seen as more efficient to let states handle their own voting, particularly for national elections because most elections are going to be state level or lower, if I'm not mistaken, so that partitioning amongst states of the union kind of makes sense. I don't really have an answer for that because some shit just is.

No that doesn't count as hacking an election. Every government does this. You'd need to go back retroactively and take away the win of every president for the past 250 years. It's an underhanded tactic, but this is not hacking an election. There's no law against trolling, shitposting, or spreading memes. And even if there were which would be absurd, there's no way to measure it or enforce it. Hacking means hacking ballots, period. Which there's been no evidence of. Discussing it in the above context is pointless, because the same thing can be turned on the Democrats where as a collective country we'll just now go and investigate who 'hacked' the other side via memes and shitposting now that we've reasoned away the win on the other side until there's no law left.
