...who should I side with, Imperials or Stormcloaks?

I'm strongly considering the Imperials based on what I've read, even if the game seems to push the Stormcloaks as "the good guys".

Stormcloaks are idiots that would break the Empire even more and let the Dominion steamroll everyone whereas the Imperials are only playing nice with them right now until they can strike back.

For story / moral reasons, Imperials.

For in-game / loot reasons, Stormcloaks.

One thing that might go unnoticed (or might be irrelevant to your personal needs) is that there exists in each hold a particular ruined fort, half of which must be conquered during the Civil War questline based upon which side each hold supports. These forts are filled with enemies before the Civil War - bandits, warlocks, etc - but are cleared out and replaced with allied soldiers once cleared. Long story short, siding with the Stormcloaks leaves the more interesting forts untouched, letting them respawn and be plundered for the rest of the game. It's not a huge difference, but a noteworthy one.

Everyone on here says Imperials because they are liberal, pro government schmucks.


Stormcloaks were unlawfully taken over by the Empire. They just want their land.

Skyrim was part of the Empire long before the Stormcloaks were ever a thing. In fact Ulfric fought for the Empire.
