Everyone I talk to in real life wants one, will we have a Wii or Wii U on our hands here?

I loved the Wii U by the way, so no claiming I'm hating.

Probably N64? Can't see it becoming as huge as Wii, but it likely won't flop like Wii U. It'll have some of the Nintendo games people really want, but I still have this feeling that anybody hoping for great 3rd party stuff should just abandon hope. We'll see how it plays out. If it takes like 1.5-2 years to get another big Nintendo release it could fall apart like Wii U

Switch is already starting to see some of the stuff that'd typically be on 3DS and Vita so I really don't think third party is going to be that much of a problem. Well, for the people that liked the third party stuff on 3DS and Vita, anyway.

The N64 middle zone. I was expecting another Wii U disaster, but I'll be happy to be wrong (looks like I am so far).

I'll admit similarly. I didn't think it'd tank like the Wii U did, but "still trends beneath GameCube" was my initial thought process.

it's probably going to be a 3DS-like success but with more mainstream attention and without the awful first year. I think there's an outside chance it could reach the heights of last-gen systems (80m+) if Nintendo can successfully develop and market games that appeal to American audiences as a substitute for the mega third party blockbusters the Switch won't receive, although I wouldn't count on it. it'll pass the Xbox One in sales worldwide sooner rather than later.

I know you included the N64 as a middle of the road option, but if the Switch matched the N64's sales it would rightfully be viewed as a disaster.

Sorry Jeff. Hail Zoltan!

Edit: I also agree with Icon's post, the games market is much, much larger than it was in N64 days. Those numbers especially after the success of the Wii won't cut it anymore.

Games are coming out too slow, feels like they are blowing their load too early
Zelda is out, Mario Kart is out, Arms is out...

Now what? We have Mario, Splatoon 2 and..? Smash wasn't announced, Pokken is whatever

To me it looks like the Switch is yet again one of those Nintendo consoles that promises strong 3rd party support games but will never delivers, again

BOTW must have been one hell of a game if it made the Switch so succesful because as of now I don't see a reason to buy it

Yeah, I'm worried about after Mario what it will have. They don't exactly pump out mainline titles these days. BotW could be the only Zelda for like 3 years and the same goes for Mario unless they likely (inevitably) do more NSMB type stuff. Considering Nintendo titles seem to be the only thing people buy they're going to need to fill the years with titles people want without large gaps of nothing.

If they really do somehow grab the handheld crowd they might not need to worry as much, but as of right now they simply don't have the supply to make it worthwhile. That's why the latest Pokemon is going to be 3DS still. People have lost faith in other Nintendo titles too after how they've been treated (Star Fox and Metroid are the first to come to mind). I'd say Nintendo really needs to kill it at E3, but let's be real they could have Mario eat a bowl of cereal in Odyssey and win some people over

Yes it sounds promising, but all of them has no release date..they can release as late as 2018

I think it's time for Nintendo to decide if the Switch is the 3DS successor - if it is, I guess we could expect more games for this system..."smaller games", more fitting for a handheld than a home console
Because as of now, all non-indie games for the Switch are home-consoles games

I'm not even sure if they promised strong third party support this time. That ship sailed with the SNES and hasn't come back.

I think hardcore gamers expect this to be a Nintendo/Japan machine, so the big question is how good those Nintendo games will be. Wii U had some solid games, but honestly, none of them was the type of generation-defining release that you'd buy a console for. BotW is already better than anything the Wii U got during its few years of life. If Mario Odyssey is anywhere near as good, then they'll already be far ahead.

Also, if this thing has five more years of life left, I have to assume they'll release a new Mario Kart.

I think it will be somewhere between Wii and N64. It won't be the monster that the Wii was, but it won't get blown away by the other consoles.

Well this is the case for most, if not all, consoles. You either wait until they develop a decent library or buy them early for that one killer app. The PS2 had almost nothing for an entire year (then caught fire in late 2001 and never looked back). The PS3 and 360 were also notoriously slow out the gate, and the PS4 didn't get an awesome exclusive until Bloodborne, which was almost 1.5 years after launch.

Eh, GameCube had pretty comparable 3rd party support with PS2 and X-Box. There may have been a few that were left out that the other two got but it was certainly MUCH better than today. It also got a lot of 3rd party exclusives/timed exclusives, and I mean killers like Tales of Symphonia and Resident Evil 4.

That's fair - the GameCube did OK, but it was an entirely different industry back then because third party exclusives were the driving force of gaming, not third party multi-platform releases like we have today. Neither Nintendo or Microsoft got GTA (I mean at the time of release when it really mattered), Final Fantasy, or Metal Gear Solid. The PS2 ate their lunch because it had the third party titles people wanted to play.

The difference is that Microsoft was able to get ALL OF THEM starting in the next generation, which is why the 360 flourished. Nintendo got nothing.

I'm pretty sure you listed all the major series that went non-timed multiplatform in that generation for your example, and in MGS's case it barely counts for that gen.

Sure, you can bring up stuff like Silent Hill, but there's a reason you didn't.
