Do you think 57 is too old to be getting a BA?

59 y/o Donna Kikkert, a STUDENT at Wisconsin University is suing her poetry professor because her teacher gave her an F in advanced creative writing poetry class of which she thinks she deserves an A for!!

She complained against Patricia Dyjak claiming her teaching material had alienated "mainstream" students at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point

She is pursing a BA and said Patricia "swung the pendulum far to the side of the LGBT students while she, the "mature" student got an F grade in the class.

She also said her failing grade was the result of "capricious retaliation" after she complained to her about the lgbt content and the professor's behaviour toward students.

A county judge dismissed the case, but Donna is still pursuing an appeal as she won't let this go.

She wanted to study classic poetry in the course but got a different syllabus than she expected. She said "For the reading material in this court, Ms Dyjak chose 5 poetry textbooks which focused on lesbians, illicit sexual relationships, incest and frequent swearing. A rational person would surmise these textbook choices to be myopically degrading and insulting to the intelligence of university students who would have greatly benefited from a balanced study of poets"

Donna said by focusing on LGBT works, Dyjak chose to discount the importance and the validity of the mainstream student population.

Not only does Donna demand an A, but wants Dyjak to be suspended or a year WITHOUT pay and REMOVED from the university entirely!!

If it's one thing I am willing to believe, it's that an SJW was not being objective or rational and just letting their opinions and emotions dictate 100% of their being. Not to say this 59 year old student isn't just a moron who would blame their honest failure on something arbitrary. I'm torn.

There's an acquaintance of my mom's who is a driving examiner and he flunked some middle-aged woman who then ranted to her friend in French about how this guy is just racist against her because she's French. He overheard and replied in French "well, I guess I hate my whole family then too"... He simply doesn't have an accent, but is French himself. Owned.

So a 59 year old university student wrote a poem about how she hates gays and her professor gave her an F for it, lmao.

Everything about this is pathetic.

I mean, the problem with poetry class is that it's all subjective.

But a university professor should be objective. She shouldn't let her own political opinion influence the grade. Of course, there's no guarantee that's the case here.

Good for her trying to confront the overt far-left bias in America's universities. She'll lose, of course, but good for her.

Given that far-leftism in American universities is a systemic issue, it's largely intractable. The upper-ups in these places try to bring in and advance leftist professors and, in time, those professors become the new management. Moderates don't have those same opportunities and, for the most part, conservatives are nearly shut out of the system entirely. And, because there's a near monopoly on education, it's not like you can boycott one school in favor of another. So you're stuck occasionally listening to professors claim that only white people ever took slaves and that they invented slavery, claims made by an actual tenured professor at my brother's school. The already-tenured professor was, of course, completely, 100% wrong on every count, but facts have no place in American universities.

Which is a fair criticism, unless it was specially an alternative sexuality poetry class.

Depends on how you view the degree. Clearly she's too old to get much mileage from it, but otherwise academics doesn't really have any age guidelines.

Given that we know absolutely nothing about what she may or may not have written, that claim is pathetic. The only thing we know is that she got an F. There's nothing to suggest that she wrote anything disparaging gays, that's pure speculation.

Maybe if she focused more on the incest, and less on the LGBT part, people might've been more sympathetic. Unless she just threw incest out there to try to make it sound worse, which wouldn't surprise me.

I have mixed feelings about this.

I think if you go into a university level poetry course, you need to have some comfort with queer subject matter. It's gonna be there in the 21st century, and it's on you to live with it. On the other hand, I'm perfectly willing to believe there was an excessive focus on LGBT material at the expense of providing a grounding in the classics. But that just means you're going to a shitty school

I like how because it's political it somehow becomes free domain. For all we know the teacher could have been gay, damn right I'd give her an F.

People need to shut the hell up and stop pestering the lgbt already. They're just normal humans, they're not a political movement.

I know right? Everybody knows lib arts have been dominated by socialist garbage for years now in the west. Started heavily in the late 80's early 90's at the coasts and the trend slowly enclosed around the heartland.

Given that she had multiple complaints and we only saw two direct quotes, it's possible that she was including all of those alternative sexualities under the LGBT label despite not falling under LGBT. By contrast, the actual focus of the article is decided on by the Daily Mail which would have gone for the most controversial angle because controversy creates cash.

Again, we have no idea what her work looked like or what she wrote, only that she complained about the syllabus and was given an F afterward. She might have been a lousy poet or the professor might have had it in for her because she had the "audacity" to complain. However, if you're letting personal biases dictate your grading policies rather than being able to look objectively at work, you're an awful professor and you have no business teaching. Given your stated biases, it's a good thing you aren't a teacher and, if the allegations are true, she shouldn't be one either regardless of her sexuality.
