Maybe people should pay their debts.

The justices, in a 9-0 ruling, upheld a lower court's dismissal of a proposed consumer class action lawsuit against Santander Consumer USA Holdings Inc over allegations it violated a law called the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

Given that it was a 9-0 ruling, it shouldn't be controversial. As Gorsuch himself noted, many rulings tend to be unanimous.

As for the decision itself, it seems silly because these companies are effectively debt collectors unless the idea that the debtors owe nothing the second the debt is purchased.

I think it means that if you aren't defined as a "debt collector", the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act doesn't really apply to you.

This seems pretty logical. As an American, I feel fine about this.

Suppose the mob were to buy your debt and then make a collection you can't refuse.

The issue is the definition itself. Clearly companies trying to collect on debts *should* logically be considered debt collectors unless, again, there's no obligation to repay on purchased debt.
