EDIT: I posted a pic of it down below. Arachnophobes beware.

After sprinting across the house in response to the typical "my wife saw a creepy crawly" shriek-- which was louder than usual this time-- I saw a spider that looked a lot like a brown recluse by my bare feet.

I reached for the nearby tissue box and bashed it into the ground before seeing what it was. Sure enough, there were 6 eyes, massive hairless legs w/no stripes, and the typical "violin-shape" that pointed toward its abdomen.

Shit. I usually don't have a problem with spiders or any other bugs, but it makes me uneasy knowing that I live right above a creepy cellar in a 100+ yr old apartment.

Heard that these things can cause people to get amputations worst-case scenario. That true?

Like the black widow, it is one of the few species of spider whose bite can have an adverse effect on people.

No. Spiders, especially venomous spiders, are extremely unlikely to bite humans. It takes an incredible amount of energy to produce venom, and it's basically a waste of that energy to use that venom on something they couldn't possibly consume.

Most, if not all, of the horrific stories about spider bites should be attributed to bacterial infections rather than spider venom.

This is the reassurance I was looking for. Lol

I shouldn't have worn my Spider-Man/Venom shirt after work tonight, I guess. Attracted an unwanted crowd.

Am I weird if I would rather have dangerous spiders in my house than house centipedes?

Had house centipedes ALL THE TIME when I lived in Chicago. They killed most other household pests... lived there for 14 years and never saw anything except centipedes.

Spiders don't bother me all that much, but I'll admit seeing a brown recluse in my house for the first time kinda weirded me out. Killed one of them at work the other week, but that was at work.

They're called recluses because they hide in old low traffic spaces. They aren't aggressive but will bite if provoked. Be careful about shoes and reaching into dark corners of cabinets or crawl spaces.

Their venom is necrotic, causing tissue death. Their bite can get out of control if left untreated but it is treatable.

Meanwhile, in Australia...

I was going to throw in a pic of someone in a fist fight with one the size of a small car or a herd of ones the size of dogs wandering across the street at one of their frequent designated crossings, but I realized that line works on its own.
