At mine I hand them the range card they issued me and tell them what handgun I want to rent and swipe my debit card.

Depends what state you are in. In Nevada you just have to sign a waver saying you are not drunk or on drugs and they will let you fire off anything you want. In NY, you have to take a short class on gun safety (which they give you a card afterwords) and you have to present that card when you go to the range. NY usually doesn't have fully automatic guns like Nevada though.

Over here I don't have to do anything. I just ask for a lane on the range and they ask me what I want to shoot. That's about it.

Many ranges wont let you rent unless you bring a friend, bring a gun with you, or are a member of the range.

Last time i rented one, they asked me if i have used a gun before, i told them rifles and shotguns but not handguns, so they took a moment to show me how to work it. Just needed my id and 30 bucks.
