http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2017-06-14/gundam-director-shinji-takamatsu-responds-to-nhk-anime-industry-special/.117352

"Takamatsu ended his series of tweets by saying he believes that the limits of the current way of making anime are approaching. He thinks bankruptcy will lead to changes in the way anime is produced. He said he thinks that could happen in five or ten years. Takamatsu then said, "No, maybe [studios] don't even have ten years lol.""

Maybe we'll have to prepare to go manga-only.

Even if so, I highly doubt everyone will be interested in reading Manga as much as they were watching Anime, I know I for one likely wouldn't bother looking up any Manga to read if it wasn't something I was already reading, at that point, I'd just watch "older" Anime to fill any "holes".

Are you an OG Gundam fan?

I'm a traitor to the series because I only like G Gundam which is their super robot show and nothing like the rest :p

He's definitely right.

The last great anime was Code Geass.

There have been some good Gundam shows since but it's still a near 40-year-old franchise.

Whether an Anime has recently been good or not is subjective to taste and opinions, one I can name off that I loved and was recent, was KonoSuba, That show was hilarious and brilliant, but that's just me, to each their own I guess.

Then again you also have more recent Anime where the sole drama/"darkness" comes from just killing people off, or in that shitty Re:Zero's case, How many times can you murder the MC before the viewer becomes bored of him repeating the same shit 1,000+ times?.

2 shows out of how many channels? I pay for cable and even I think it's a waste of money as we only watch 2 or 3 channels. However I'm stuck with it because it's the only way to get unlimited data with AT&T.

About half the ones I like are from the 80's. The other half are scattered sporadically through the 90's and early 2000's.

Ironically enough, most of the anime the 90's kids (ie, the core of the current fanbase) love are shows I was lukewarm at best towards, and at worst actively disliked. I never gave a single shit about stuff like DBZ or Naruto, and Death Note mostly left me sort of cold.

My main problem is that I really only got into anime once I was already in my late teens/early adulthood (apart from stuff like Voltron and G-Force), which meant I mostly bypassed the Shonen genre entirely. And I started to lose interest in anime entirely a few years after college, which meant that by the time some of the newer shows came out, or things like Crunchyroll existed, I was already completely out of the loop and not caring.

I mostly dropped out of the anime fanbase around the same time most current fans were getting into it. Which I acknowledge makes me sound like a total anime hipster, but which I think is more tied to age, and the fact that I tend to think anime is more of a younger demographic thing (in the West, at least). I suspect a lot of current fans are going to "age out" of it at some point.

Conversely, anime could go the same way video games did, where the zeitgeist eventually shifts and younger fans stay invested even as they get older (the way younger video game fans seem to be now) versus losing interest as they get older (the way video game fans who grew up in the early 80's tended to - I think fanbase retention really only began in earnest with the cohort who started gaming during the N64/PS1 era).

Kind of like me, although I admit my reason for getting into it was mostly to have common interests with the girl I was trying to get into the pants of at the time. Even then, she was into Shojo and I was into more of the stuff inspired by Bande Dessinée. Once I stopped caring about that girl, my interest in Anime went away with it (although I still like some Bande Dessinée from time to time, just not Japanese Anime specifically).

I find the numbers kinda shocking but, given how expensive production supposedly is, I was wondering how they managed at all. In general, though, he seems to be referring more to the *traditional* methods of animation since the story implies that the new technology will put traditional, low-level animators out of work. This implies that the industry as a whole can go on.

Pretty much. In general, anime hasn't thrilled me as much as it used to, but I don't necessarily attribute that to a decline in quality.

I'm not sure how tied to age it is, but I think after a certain point you just hit a fatigue since a lot of anime makes use of the similar tropes, etc. I've periodically dropped in and out of anime. After stopping it for a little while, I was huge into it around maybe late 2007 going into 2008 or 2009 then kinda dropped out again. Then, sometime after coming back to PotD a few years ago, I wound up binging the works of the mangaka Junji Ito after somebody linked to a few of his stories and an archive.

In general, I kinda approach a lot of things in hot/cold phases. I'm also occasionally massively into horror.
