it does that for larger updates because Wifi should be faster and won't count against your plans data limit if it has one.

Yep. If you have a trusted wifi network at home or work I would set up your phone to connect to those whenever possible to save data on your mobile plan. If you have an unlimited data plan for your phone the advantages for wifi would still probably be stability and speed.
