Reformed animation codes are in place now to prevent this stuff from happening again in children's programming.

Adult cartoons are a different matter. They run on more ambiguous rules due to a large portion of the content intentionally consisting of provocative shock material for mature comedy. Some of that material includes taking jabs at racial and gender stereotypes. The general consensus is that, as long as the show appears to make fun off "everyone" to a some notable degree, than it's fine. No angry mobs will be demanding it off the air (or rather not enough critics will gather to make that happen). Either way, the show's typically free to continue.


If you want the reruns of old cartoons to stop being shown on specialized premium TV networks due to offensive content, you're going to have to pull a Marge Simpson and write letters to officials, picket the station, etc. As laws are presently written, those networks are free to show that content under the premise of nostalgia.

I was going to point out that Warner Brothers actually handle it pretty well. There's a late night timeblock where they air the really old racist stuff, but have a disclaimer. It says something along the lines of "What is presented in this program does not reflect the views of the company today. We're showing these in their original form, because acknowledging it is better than pretending those times never existed."
