Police arrested 47-year-old British man Darren Osborne on Monday for ramming a rented van into a a crowd of Muslims, killing one and injuring ten outside a mosque in Finsbury Park. After exiting the vehicle, Osborne reportedly yelled “I’m going to kill all Muslims.” Local authorities are calling the incident a terrorist attack. Details are still emerging about the suspected killer, but according to Osborne’s neighbors in Pentwyn, Cardiff, the father of four was known to be an angry and Islamophobic *** hole.

Nadeem Sherazi, a 12-year-old who lives next door in the South Wales suburb, told The Guardian that Osborne harassed him just this past Saturday. Sherazi’s father is originally from Pakistan and his Welsh mother identifies as Muslim.

“I was on my bike and he just came up to me and said ‘in-bred’. Just out there [on the road],” Sherazi said. “It was just a normal voice. He just said it.”

Sherazi’s 10-year-old sister Nadia also heard Osborne hurl the racial epithet: “Me and my nan were sat on the deck. She was putting the washing out. All of a sudden we heard him say ‘in-bred’. I said to my nan: ‘Did you hear that?’ She said it was probably to his dogs.”

Also over the weekend, Osborne was reportedly thrown out of a Cardiff bar for getting drunk and “cursing Muslims and saying he would do some damage.”

Another neighbor told The Metro that Osborne had a shitty reputation in the community. “He had lived on the estate for a few years,” the neighbor said. “He’s always been a complete **** but this [murder] is really surprising.”

Pharmacist Rebecca Carpenter, 26, said Osborne was “quite a shouty person, always shouting at his wife and kids.” The suspect reportedly separated from his partner in recent months, and when she visited, neighbors remember them fighting verbally in the road. “He always seemed an aggressive and strange person,” Carpenter said. “He never caused us any real problems, but we could often hear him shouting from the other side of the street.”

Even Osborne’s mother Christine condemned him Monday. “I’m not going to defend him,” she told British broadcaster ITV. “It’s a terrible, terrible shock and it’s not just robbing the bank or something—it’s an atrocity.”

Osborne was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and commission, preparation or instigation of terrorism including murder.
