Board 8 > How good are the Layton games?

I'm wanting to get back into using my 3DS. I think the Layton games look pretty good - I like the idea of a series of little puzzles. It looks charming. Is the plot worthwhile?

Should I try to get my hands on the first or could I start with the first 3DS one?

4-6 is a prequel trilogy

3 is the best one

Alright I'll give the Last Specter a little more credit, it's actually pretty fine
It's just not a must-play game at all
Same goes for the Miracle Mask, and then there is also the matter of probably getting burnet out of the series and the puzzles are not unique anymore

It's just that the Azran Legacy is a shit-tier game that you will feel like you must play it because it's the last one in the series and complete the prequel trilogy and is probably the most important game in the series story-wise

They are good puzzle games. Nothing more. By the time I finished the 3rd game I was done with the series. Didn't want anything more even though the 3rd game was the best one from the trilogy.

I kinda expected Ace Attorney levels of intrigue from the series so naturally I was let down in that regard.

The 3rd game (Unwound Future) is the highlight of the series. So I'd start with the original trilogy. And the first game still holds up as a good entry point.

The prequel trilogy (4 to 6) has gameplay improvements and is still good if you want more Layton after the first three, but doesn't really ever recapture the magic of the original trilogy.

Love them. The games' world and characters are incredibly charming, and if you're willing to forgive a lot of cheesiness and plot contrivances, the stories can be fun and occasionally touching. The puzzles are also a lot of fun, of course.
