You can just watch it although a very basic understanding of the characters help.

Also I think for a lot of people part of it being so good was it being Jackmans final movie after years of being wolverine so you wouldn't get that same feeling.

I mean I know about wolverine and all of that but I wasn't sure if I needed to know anything from the prior movies

That's all you need to know. Plus, I think the older you are... the more relevant several of the undertones in the movie become.

It helps that everything except Wolverine's mind was reset in DoFP, which is the last movie in the continuity.

But that in itself made Logan more tragic. A story about a guy who was over 200 years old by the point and how broken down he and Charles ended up after such resilience in the past.
Especially Charles who is still being played out in the First Class series.
