This is one thing that really grinds my gears and has for the longest. If you don't like being called that, then don't say it. I say it a lot, but I don't exclusively use it for black people. To be an N is akin to being an idiot--i.e. everyone has the potential to be one. It's not dependent on color, but wholly on one as a person.

This is "er" versus "a" and conpletely different for most people. For me, I don't say either but for most people there's a definite distinction.

Well, black people predominately use it, so if you hate it so much when other races use it, then keep it off your lips. T__T

Not YOU you, mind you.

Uh, most black people I know don't use -er for each other in a friendly manner...

"sure they dont"

I don't use it in a friendly manner, either. But, as I said, I don't use it exclusively for black people. And I CERTAINLY don't care if another race says it. I'm not up-in-arms saying that it's bad for, say, white people to call a person--regardless of race--a nigeria. >___>

It's only offensive because of who is saying it

No, it's not. I have black friends that get offended by the word whenever another black person says it too. The person saying the word doesn't change the fact that the word is horrible and needs to disappear, not be used as slant by a certain group of people

If a black person say it, it's like saying "my fellow black person" or "my brother.". It's a comraderie thing. So if someone who isn't black says it, it's not alright because you're not black and you don't know what black people go through. Some don't like it when anybody says the word because it reminds them of slavery and Jim Crow

LMAO.
Just because you say it means "comrade" doesn't mean that's what the word means. You can't change it's meaning. The word was created to put a race down.

I swear there really is stupid black people that ruin it for the rest of them. They wonder why people look down on all of them. Blame the dumb ones who think like this

shit talking like this is not good for ones well being. fuck off you leftist bitch

Speaking of Jim Crow, not being allowed to use a word because you aren't black is like not being allowed to use a certain drinking fountain because you aren't white.

Because when we use it with one another it's an acknowledgement of our shared experiences and history as a racial subclass in America, and a reminder to check yourself and remember where you come from. Both meanings have this connotation of leveling with someone. It's definitely possible for a black person to use it from a place of hate, but more often we use it with one another from a place of solidarity. And even then, it's complicated, a lot of black people will never be okay with that word, and refuse to use it, and that's fine.

When non-black people say it they don't have that cultural connection. They're commoditizing it. It's a cheap affectation for them, because they don't share my experiences and they never will. And look at how they use it, to give themselves edge or try and cozy up with other minorities like they've always been down. It's reductive, and so obviously fake it's insulting.

And then of course, there's still that group of people who still use it like hate speech. You used to only see those types online. Now they feel emboldened to show their true colors in public.

Again, most don't care if they know you. Maybe get some black friends and you'll find out. Really, this "why can't I say it thing" is really onlt an issue with white people who don't have any black friends and get upset about it since they're ignorant to the whole thing. Sure, a random white guy saying it to a random blsck guy he doesn't know won't go over well but being on friendly terms with someone will likely be received better. Of course, that's obviously not a golden rule, some won't enjoy it no matter what. All black people aren't a hivemind so... figure it out when you're actually friends.

This is still racist. Saying well everyone can be one is pretty much saying "Black people are below me so i use that word to let people know that anyone can be below me like black people"

We had to fight for freedom, the right to vote, the right to own land, the right to equal education, and the right to pretty much be considered people in this country. We tried to make a terrible word into a positive for us and now people are saying we cant use.

No one denies its history but its ours to use the way we want.

Pretty good friends, actually. Back when we met (and it was pretty much at the same time back when I came to USA), the fact that they found the word offensive came up, so I just didn't bring it up anymore.

Maybe it's just how they were raised or something, but I've always been extra careful about not using it even as a joke when talking to black friends and acquaintances.

It's not really a problem as much as simple curiosity of why this is a thing. For example, today I learned that the f-word is apparently not as frowned upon as I thought it was, so you learn something new everyday.

Race issues are just handled very differently in this country, so it's confusing to me.

If you've read this topic than one of the first things you should have noticed is that opinion on this is still extremely divided within the black community. So don't take this as a go ahead to start trying to reclaim hateful speech, because it's had very mixed results. After the Pulse shooting some people were really sketchy about the use of the word 'queer' as an umbrella term for LGBT+ people, because of the violence historically associated with that word. 'Queer' had been 'reclaimed' almost universally, but all it took to make people start to doublethink was a painful incident that struck a particular emotional chord.

It's a complex issue. The least we can do is approach it with respect for that complexity.

If you've read this topic than one of the first things you should have noticed is that opinion on this is still extremely divided within the black community. So don't take this as a go ahead to start trying to reclaim hateful speech, because it's had very mixed results

I'm not saying that everyone should be allowed to say it. I don't use the word personally, it's just something that's understood. I was simply pointing out how flawed the logic behind his argument is, nothing more

"Don't use that word because I can't use it!"

Just say what the fuck you really mean, people.

It's more about the fact that the notion of certain words in a vocabulary being exclusive to select groups of people doesn't make any sense.

Yes, language evolves over time and words are either accepted or rejected depending on how their meaning evolves, but if a word is deemed to be offensive, the rule should apply for everyone.

The concept of certain words only being "unlocked" if you're born with a certain skin color is ridiculous.
