Just say what the fuck you really mean, people.

It's more about the fact that the notion of certain words in a vocabulary being exclusive to select groups of people doesn't make any sense.

It's a word that refers to a select group of people and you're still prattling on about this bullshit. As has been pointed out, there's nothing preventing you from saying it too.

First off, I don't give a crap about saying the word. It's a dumb, derogatory word that people think is "cool" for some reason.

Second of all, even if I wanted to say it, there would be a very little thing that would stop me: The fact that I would get my ass kicked or fired from my job for saying it if I'm not black.

And if a word is so offensive that it can cause such a reaction on people, then it might aswell be outright banned, just like Swastikas in every functioning modern society.

Well, here's the thing. Just ask the person if it's ok, but if you're gonna use the term, make sure you've already built up some rapport with them before broaching the subject, because at that point it just looks like "hey black guy, let's talk about black stuff and use that jive talk I hear that y'all use."

It should always be a case by case basis, but yeah, never in a professional setting.

Why is this such a big deal? Just don't say it if you're not black. And if you are black, just don't say it around people who are uncomfortable with it.

they definitely shouldn't be allowed to, or rather, they shouldn't want to. in trying to take ownership of that pejorative they unconsciously associate themselves to its original meaning.

Yes, language evolves over time and words are either accepted or rejected depending on how their meaning evolves, but if a word is deemed to be offensive, the rule should apply for everyone.

The concept of certain words only being "unlocked" if you're born with a certain skin color is ridiculous.

Don't reduce it to skin color. There are several posts in this topic explaining the intersections of shared history, culture, and solidarity which define the social boundaries of certain pieces of slang. I'm not telling you something you don't already know, something that hasn't already been laid out in detail three or four times in this very topic.

You accept that certain ways of associating with people can become inappropriate depending upon the context (Who is talking to who? How well do they know one another? etc). It's why you don't stroll up to older strangers reminiscing about your nostalgia. Your experiences are not the same. In fact, depending upon some of those contextual details, such a conversation might even be presumptuous, informal and uncooth. If you can understand the wrinkles of that, than you can understand why certain phrases and slang may be culturally available to you, and why you use them at risk to your own social capital.

I wonder how many people in this topic thing '-a' and '-er' are the same word and are conflating the two.

Second of all, even if I wanted to say it, there would be a very little thing that would stop me: The fact that I would get my ass kicked or fired from my job for saying it if I'm not black.

Well, yeah, but that doesn't have to do with your point about words being exclusive to people.

Good thing we live in a country with free speech. I personally don't like its prevalence either, but I'm against the "-a" usage and I'm pretty sure that most, if not all of us are not ok with the "-er" usage.

I hate these topics because im greatly censored having to dance around the ToS. You might as well ask me this question at work whered id lie to you and just say "I dont know" and totally avoid the conversation because its just a bad topic at work.

And theyll get offended anyways and thats "offensive material" or youre just fired at work for offending a race. Because "politics" is the safe, correct answer.

I don't think it's a case of people wanting to be overtly racist but more to be dismissive and undermine what black people experience.

I mean, as a black man, the word doesn't bother me. I've had white people use it, Spanish, Asian...whatever. it was used as a term of endearment and not racist. Obviously it's different for different people. as you said, anyone that said it around me had a rapport with me.
