It depends how you define things. I think Canada only technically broke away from the UK completely in the 80s or something. On the other hand a few years ago there was a celebration in my home city for "Democracy 250" because the province had been electing its leaders democratically for 250 years.

I am pretty sure it is going by the day the canadian constitution was writen, which was 150 years ago in 1867.

Depends what you mean by "broke away". Canada is still a member of the British Commonwealth and the Queen is our head-of-state, so in that sense we've never "broken away" from the UK the way the US did. The event you're referring to was the patriation of the Canadian Constitution from Britain to Canada and it occurred in 1982, but we were a sovereign country a long time before that.
