That are fun in singleplayer.

I have avoided the genre because I suck at multitasking but I recently played through the Company of Heroes 1 campaigns and had a blast. Oh, and I've played the Total War games. Otherwise I'm completely foreign to the genre.

Age of Empires 2 and Mythology.
Command and Conquer series (these generally play slightly differently to most RTS games, Generals being like most RTS games).
Warcraft 3.

First three games are free in the C&C series.
Warcraft 3 has a demo iirc, as does AoM2.

Anyway, most RTS games you build a base, build units, etc. C&C does have that but you can only really build one unit at a time. IE, one barracks unit, one vehicle, etc. Other games like say AoM, lets you have multiple barracks producing their own units

This is only correct prior to C&C3

They actually changed it so it makes sense?
Well dang.
Also there is only C&C3, no other games exist past it.

Yes, I am in denial but let it be

Total Annihilation is best in genre. but the single player mode is a bit lacking without the expansions. and I'm not sure how it's packaged on Steam.

Starcraft 2 is the most accessible RTS.

Otherwise, go with the Aoe II HD remake.

and a personal favorite that doesn't often get recommend is Rise of Nations. It mixes some civ 4x with rts and the risk like world map of a lot of total war games.
