I'm going to see it, and not think of it as Jumanji. Has a stellar cast, so I think it'll be a fun watch; just not a good Jumanji movie.

Basically this is how I see it. Just using the Jumanji name for its name, which is bleh, but looks like a fun popcorn flick otherwise.

The concept of people being sucked into a 80's/90's esque video game and forced to be characters they're nothing like does seem like it could be a humorous concept. But Jumanji is such an odd choice for it.

The Jumanji board game felt like this ancient, magic and mysterious thing that has likely sucked in and ruined people throughout the generations. A mysterious video game system dates it to only be a few decades old and yet it still somehow ended up being forgotten in a school basement. It's just an odd choice.

The new movie looks horrible to be called the sequel to Jumanji.

If it was named something else, maybe I could have given it a chance.

The original had more heart. It was action, adventure, drama, and comedy all in one. The new movie looks like a goofy, slapstick comedy film.

Also after looking this up guys you are aware this is a sequel and not a remake?

So, you're saying that at some point after the original ends, someone somehow turns a magical board game into a magic atari game. Despite the fact that the atari was already old when the original Jumanji came out. Either that or there is a completely unrelated magic atari game also called Jumanji set in the jungle.

No matter how you look at it, it makes no sense and looks bad.

"This magical board game gets turned into a magical video game for the sequel THAT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE THOUGH"

Seriously, bro?

There's a difference in filmmaking between dispension of disbelief and not following the rules of your own world you've established.

It honestly would be more forgivable if it WAS a remake, but if it is in fact a sequel, then it has to follow what's already been established in the first film.

I'm overly bothered by the fact that it looks like an atari with Genesis controllers and high resolution graphics. If they can't even give enough of a shit to make their game reboot consistent with an era, that tells me they're not likely going to give a shit about anything else.

They didn't want to spend any extra money to pay Sony, or Microsoft, or Nintendo to use one of their consoles in the movie. Which does show how much they "care."

I'm more wondering where you two saw high res graphics in this trailer. All you see of the "game" is a static background image where they choose their characters. After that, they get sucked into the video game at which point I think you can start discounting the limitations of technology.

And this is my issue with the comparison. The original would probably be classified as a comedy, but there was enough serious shit in it that you could almost call it a drama too. This one seems too goofy for my taste.

Comparisons aside, it just looks meh to me. Someone above said it looked soulless and that's what it seems to me. Maybe if they'd gone more whole-hog into it being a video game it could work for me.

If you want the original, watch the original. Don't bash the new version simply because it has new ideas.

If the movie is shit, bash that, but don't bash it just because it's not a 1 for 1 remake.

For the most part I agree but there are just some things you do not change about the original. For instance Jumanji should always be a board game.

The resolution of the color gradient on the character select implies either 32-bit graphics or higher.

Went in to the trailer expecting trash

Now I really want to see it.

But shit, it opens up with Star Wars 8?

What's up with the Rock starring in movies based on older stuff and opening against big popular franchises this year? First Baywatch vs POTC, now this.

I'm aware of that, which is why I began my complaint with "I'm overly bothered by the fact that".

My larger point is that the console looks like its from the 70s, the controllers are from the 90s, and the graphics are from early 2000s. A total lack of consistency in set design can show a lack of real care by the team making a good movie, which could imply this is more of a shameless cash grab than a reboot actually worth watching.

Looks fine to me. Switching the board game to a video game is a nice way of modernizing the story.

people still play board games

and a magic video game is really stupid since no one today proclaims to be a real sorcerer

a several hundred year old board game on the other hand would have been made in the age of superstition and alchemy when people did regard the spirits and curses and believe in such

so no

it isn't modernizing it

it is ruining it

it is not pedantic

it is details like this that change this from a mindless flick a few people will watch once and then it goes into the bargain bin to be forgotten like "journey to the center of the earth" with the Rock

or is regarded as a classic that is beloved by people for generations to come like the original Jumanji

movies are about aesthetics, and little care or thought into said aesthetics is what separates great movies from c- movies

as such this highlights even more the stupid choice of video game over board game
the board game in the original was HIGHLY aesthetic

from the orig
https://static.independent.co.uk/s3fs-public/styles/article_small/public/thumbnails/image/2017/03/28/08/jumanji.jpg

highly crafted wood, not just cardboard
careful thought out design that suggests maybe some witch doctor made the game

look at this replica, yes, aesthetic enough to cause people to want to make replicas!

Videogames already existed in 1995, some of which looked pretty much like that "TV Games" thing in the 2017 trailer.

Board games were still very popular in the 90s...now, not so much (especially compared to video games).

None of those movies looked good to me. This one does look entertaining, though again I don't see any reason to connect it to the original, which is the problem majority of people have.
