Current Events > So The Crash N. Sane Trilogy is "bad" because of 'dated game design'

This is the final paragraph from the GameSpot review (6/10)

The culprit behind Crash's dated feel is the passage of time. Vicarious Visions, for its part, succeeded in revitalizing Crash from an artistic perspective while preserving the charm that made him appealing when he first showed up, but years have passed since the original PlayStation was relevant, and we are well past the formative years of 3D gaming. It's easy to imagine how a dyed-in-the-wool Crash fan will fall in love all over again via the N. Sane Trilogy, but if you're experiencing Crash for the first time--or the first time in a while--it might pain you to realize that Crash's original adventures aren't as inventive or surprising as they were 20 years ago.

So basically Mario gameplay translated into 3D is "dated". Of course, Super Mario Maker received a 9/10 so they still like Mario gameplay...

Apparently some games are retro and nostalgic while others are "dated". Which one is which? Who knows

They were definitely flawed. BUT ...within those flaws, they did put out some pretty good games.
I remember a few levels making me rage so hard due to the horrible level design.

NSMB uses co-op right?

That would be a pretty cool idea for a Crash game to use that mechanic. BUT this title was to see if the series still had interest....a gauge to see who still wants to play Crash.

I was referring to the DS release, which did not have coop

But it brought more than the art style into the 21st century. The controls and gameplay were updated to match the demands of the industry.

Good to see someone else who puts 2 over 3. Damn fine game, that Crash 2.

Honestly, there was a point where I wasn't hot on the Crash remakes. They looked really off, it's like Crash doesn't need this fluffy fur and these detailed eyebrows - the animation looks too smooth, everything just sort of put me off. But as the release date drew closer, I actually didn't mind what I saw of the game. That Crash 2 trailer with the wakeboard still puts me off, but I started to think "Maybe this will be rad after all".

I hope it's decent, and that this review is an outlier. But if it's going to get trashed, I'm hoping it's because the level of shine that comes from a PS4 remake throws off how the game itself plays, not just "the games are super dated, and the collection is an ugly reminder that games that were once classics have stayed in the past for a reason".

Crash 1 is probably a bit ass in places, because it's Crash 1. It's not perfect. But I'm hoping 2 and maybe 3 are worthwhile remakes.

This review legit sucks. Not because I disagree or anything. It's just a plain bad review.

Enemies rarely react to you, preferring instead to follow pre-determined paths and animation loops. And many obstacles are needlessly discouraging; Razor-thin tolerances for success and one-hit deaths make for a frustrating pairing. You can control Crash using an analog stick now, but smoother pivots and jumps don't alleviate the otherwise stiff gameplay lurking behind Crash's goofy exterior.

Err this is completely normal for a platformer that's linear like this. This review is also short as hell. It's a whopping 6 paragraphs.

Abrupt spikes in difficulty that could have been ironed out

Even in 2 and 3? Those don't really get hard near the end but;

Peter stayed current with new Crash games during the PlayStation's life span; playing the N. Sane Trilogy marks the first time he's revisited the series in almost 20 years, and he played roughly halfway through each game in the collection.

Oh.

It's got an 81 on Metacritic. Overall it's fine. This is just like when Gamespot reviewed Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze for being too hard.

ITT: people taking a game review seriously

If I listened to game reviews cause I couldn't think for myself, pretty sure I would never have played some of my favorite games cause the reviewers weren't paid enough to applaud them more.

The crash series is definitely far from the best platforms series, but this review is just embarrassing.

Yeah, at this point I'm pretty convinced professional review scores are based more on how much money is thrown at the reviewers than how good or bad the games actually are. I just wait for it to come out, and if it looks like something I'll enjoy, 90% of the time it is, regardless of what anybody else says.

3D platformers have serious perspective problems, is one reason.

3D platformers need a decent shadow in order to be playable. Crash is an example of some games that did it well.
