I don't want to be but I'm lawful good mostly.

Mostly due to not actually liking laws and rules, but, I generally follow them even though I don't like them. I don't like creating them though or enforcing them on others.

I have an underlying chaotic neutral tendency that I never really let free, but that is always there underneath waiting to get out.

It's like a multiple personality that has been sublimated over my entire life.

Yeah, but it works because in the modern era it's in my best interest to play nice. I do it for me, not for the rules or for other people, but I can cooperate so long as I have reason to. (which is why I teeter on Neutral Evil)

I probably fall where 98% of the population actually falls (regardless of what they've convinced themselves they are, or what a shitty Internet quiz says they are) - True Neutral. Because the average person isn't rebelliousness enough to be Chaotic, aren't inherently law-abiding or honor-before-reason enough to be Lawful, aren't selfless enough to be Good, but aren't sadistic enough to be Evil.

Most humans just follow the rules to avoid punishment, break the rules when they think they can get away with it, and look out for themselves but don't actively go looking to harm other people out of spite. Which puts us all pretty firmly into the True Neutral camp. It's really only the severe outliers who push out into the other quadrants (or would that be a novant?).

Or did you just mean you want to fight about whether or not alignment is a worthwhile game mechanic for the next 3 weeks, until we're the only ones posting in this topic?

Well, in game terms the point is that main characters are almost NEVER going to be "ordinary" people, so they're always going to have a much greater chance of being an outlier than Joe Q. Workingman, so the fact that most people are True Neutral doesn't matter when your characters are anything BUT "most people". They're the people motivated to go out and do insane things while everyone else stays home and waits to sell them ancient weapons or ask them to do sidequests.

Which is why it never really translates as well into a personality test as people online would like it to be. Because people online have to turn EVERY SINGLE THING EVER into a personality quiz.

Yeah, but at least with horoscopes, you're going to get a natural diffusion of people across the entire spectrum, so you (mostly) wind up with roughly equal groups. And the actual sorting mechanic is objective fact (ie, you don't get to pick which sign you prefer, and the literal day you were born isn't a subjective opinion you get to interpret for yourself).

As for the actual personality aspects of it, most of them are similar to "cold reading", in that they're usually generic enough to apply to almost anyone, consist of elements people can internalize ("Yeah, I guess I really AM clever and likeable!"), and there are enough variations that allow people with radically different personalities to attach to the same sign (ie, I'm an Aquarius and I'd NEVER connect to the "You're a humanitarian!" aspects of the sign, but I'll happily go with the "You're quirky and inventive!" side of the coin). After a certain point, the person themselves are doing most of the work to justify how they "fit" their sign, rather than expecting the sign to reflect them precisely.

Plus, the people who like the idea of horoscopes or otherwise tend to consider their sign to be part of their personal identity in some way (however great or small) are also the people who tended to match up to their sign in some way - people who have absolutely nothing in common with their sign's supposed nature are going to dismiss it out of hand and never really think about it again, leaving you with a mostly self-selected sample of people who will tell you that they're an Aquarius or that they're born in the Year of the Dragon or that they're Capricorn Ascendant with their Venus in Aries and Jupiter in Taurus.

When it comes to someone trying to pick their own Alignment, though, you're pretty much getting a picture of what they WISH they are more than what they actually are, though. Which kind of makes it about as meaningless as people who take Harry Potter Sorting Hat quizzes or try to decide whether or not they'd be Sith or Jedi.

Have you considered moving the boundary lines so that not everyone falls under one category?
At that point alignment really is stupid and useless.
