This could just be confirmation bias, but as a kid (1980s to 1990s) in Austin, it seemed like only about every 10th person was obese. There definitely were not any fat kids that went to my school, either.

If it is significantly worse now than it was, I wonder what is the major factor in this change?

Normalisation and glorification of obesity, feels before reals, 'diversity'. What else?

glorification of obesity

If anybody actually believes those nutcases, I would be shocked.

But anyway, American obesity rates started soarin more than 15 years ago so some dumbass on Twitter or whatever a few years ago can hardly be considered the cause.

Though that isn't necessarily true. There still might be more weight-maintained individuals than not but in the US their numbers are in a weaker ratio than anywhere else.

This certainly existed in the 80s and 90s, though. Not sure that is the key identifier, either.

Goes hand in hand with economic inequality. Real wages have not risen since the 70s. More and more people can barely afford food so they get the cheapest thing they can, often they have no access to fresh produce.

I'm pretty sure we were fat back then too. But inactivity due to modern conveniences, poor food choices, age, genetics, and poverty are the big factors. "Glorification of obesity" is probably not much of an actual factor at all...that's usually a theory pushed by people who spend too much time on internet forums.

It certainly played a part. You had that combined with massive ad campaigns by Coke, Pepsi, and McDonalds that pretty much made added sugars a part of everyone's diets.

Moving from NY to TN was amazing, obese people were common in NY but they're fucking everywhere down here, they truly do not give a shit. And the worst part is the more obese people there are the more it's normalized, and they feel validated in being obese.

Bunch of lazy people eating too many calories and not burning enough of them.

Yeah, obesity in the south is way too common. I suspect it's easier to be lazy when it's 110 degrees outside.

That and, despite any and all common sense, poor people tend to be fat.

The thing is, you can buy healthy food for cheap, but that food is usually fresh and requires time and preparation to make into meals. If you want food that is already prepared (or can be cooked quickly in a microwave or oven) THEN you have to go for the unhealthy processed stuff.

I regularly hear people say "healthy food isn't expensive!" but they're not seeing the bigger picture.

Something I noticed in comparing MN and WI. MN is the 39th ranked state in terms of total obesity while Wisconsin is 19th (meaning WI is decently more obese than MN, which I can definitely see). However in terms of obesity in "teens" ages 10-17, Wisconsin is ranked 38th, while MN is ranked 32nd.

I wonder what makes Wisconsin kids so much less obese than adults, especially when compared to their Minnesotan counterparts.

If your parents are fat, you're more likely to be fat. For a variety of reasons, but some of that is genetics. I'm not overweight myself but that's because I've seen my dad and his family and my grandparents and cousins mostly have weight problems, and I know how easy it is for people in our family to gain weight. I know that the moment I stop working out or start eating poorly, my body is likely to start ballooning. It's not impossible for me to stay thin but it's going to be harder for me than most, because of genetics.

Seems like genetics are an indirect factor, not a direct factor.

Yeah keep making excuses tubby, the fact of the matter is BMRs have a standard deviation of 140 calories, so barring legitimate medical anomalies there's no excuse for being obese.
