It's covered in the section "WHAT THE PERSONAL FREEDOM INDEX MEASURES" starting on page 9. I honestly couldn't truncate it because it breaks down how they measured each variable calculated in the index. They ran some correlations as well (pg. 19, 24).

Yeah, that's the part I skimmed through trying to find a justification for what constitutes a numerical value, but I couldn't find any. It'd be an interesting thing to try and debunk if I were trying to write a thesis for school or some shit, but fortunately I have my degree so I don't have to do things like thinking anymore.

But I would find the data suspect for a number of reasons.

1 - As I've said, assign a numerical value to something abstract seems insane. How do you determine what's important? Does religious freedom have a greater weight or does social freedom? Etc.

2 - Does it measure remediation? For instance, you might get buttfucked by a cop while he stops you for speeding - which is obviously wrong and anti-freedom. However, you can also petition the government and sue their shit for the act. Does that remediate the act? Or does it still count against you? Or does it count partially?

3 - In the US at least, it differs GREATLY from state to state and issue by issue. For instance, California might have fucking dumb gun laws whereas Texas you can do whatever the fuck you want. How does that factor?

4 - Where is the data coming from? They rely on organizations to provide them data, rather than perform many (if any) of the studies themselves. They seem to do their due diligence, but without REALLY drilling down, it's hard for an outside observer to know if it's accurate. For example China might report an extremely low crime rate because their method of study is corrupt as fuck.

5 - Is the data being measured equally across the board? The greatest example of this is the gun death rate when comparing the US to other countries. The US includes in their gun death statistics suicide, while other countries do not. However, when compared to other countries, people often use the US version vs. say a European countries statistics. Unfairly skewing the results.

Anyway, the point is it's easy to just take what they present as law when there are a number of reasons it may be flawed.

I wish we a special police organization solely tasked with enforcing "good citizen" laws. Not ambiguous ones like you'd find in a dictatorship, but more kicking the shit out of people for driving like assholes or setting off fireworks illegally, etc. Basically their purpose would be to physically discipline inconsiderate jerks and blend into the scenery so that there's always that looming worry before you act like a dickhead and do something the general population would agree you shouldn't. Require them to have hidden cameras at all times, for accountability, and a zero tolerance for willfully breaking any rules themselves (I dunno, with mandatory minimum sentences of 5 years for doing so).

Maybe I should just move to Singapore?..
