Do you think transgender people should be allowed to enlist?

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis with the approval of the Trump Administration has approved a 6 month delay in allowing transgender recruits to join the US Military to make sure the change in policy will not affect the "readiness" or "lethality" of the military!!

Spokeswoman Dana White said that they accepted the recommendation to deter transgender applicants until January 1st.

Mattis said "After consulting with the service chiefs and secretaries, i have determined that it is necessary to defer the start of accessions for 6 months. We will use this additional time to evaluate more carefully the impact of such accessions on readiness and lethality"..

Just last week the military leaders rejected Army and Air Force requests for a 2 year.

The Pentagon ended its ban on openly transgender people serving in the US Military under Barack Obama as many in the military who were transgender were allowed to be open.

But new transgender recruits under Trump have NOT been allowed to enlist. The Pentagon was expected to start allowing new transgeder recruits to begin enlisting provided they had been "stable" in their preferred gender for 18 months

Human Rights Activists were alarmed by this and said "There are thousands of transgender service members openly and proudly serving our nation today..what matters is the ability to get the job done, not their gender identity"

Last year, Defense Secretary Ash Carter said there were about 7000 active duty transgender soldiers with 4000 on reserves

Do you think Transgender people should be allowed to serve in the military?

Mattis -

Whether someone identifies as male or female is wholly irrelevant; in the end a body is a body once bullets are flying. The whole back and forth of the debate is largely continued by dated cultural hang-ups.

This is not true in the slightest in the military when there are different standards for males and females. Females do not offer an advantage to an infantry platoon over one that's all male. War is not the place for social justice.

Edit: Until every soldier is held to the same standard, it needs to stay the way it is. Combat effectiveness is the only thing that matters in the military.

Not only should they be allowed to enlist, it should be mandatory for them to sign up for the selective service, just like men are.

I'm pretty sure you aren't allowed to enlist if you have any other mental disorder, why should gender dysphoria be an exception?

Encouraging a mental disorder arguably makes them less stable.

How do you know it's a mental disorder? I feel it is more like a defect. Their brain is wired to be male or female but their body screwed up and made the wrong organ. Sometimes their body produces too little testosterone, their are many different reasons and it cannot be diagnosed until much later. To claim it is only a mental disorder, demeans what is really going on. Of course ypu do have people that are not true transgender and simply wish to change sex just because they can. It is a complicated medical issues.

@Melon_Master I normally see eye to eye with you on a lot of issues, but this one is summed up pretty well by Jynx. I'm pretty liberal regarding social issues, but having dealt with something as simple as a coed environment the military is in no condition to deal with something like transgender issues right now and I honestly believe it's more trouble than it's worth.

Fair enough. But I was the guy in high school that wasn't shy to walk around the locker room naked lol, so I might not be the average American male.

Well if your born with hands as feet and feet as hands, i would consider that a physical (sorry forgot this keyword last time lol) defect. Genitals being the defect makes the most sense, mainly because all boys are born as girls and then their vagina becomes a penis. It is not reaching too much to believe that in some cases the penis grows when it isn't supposed too. Like growing a extra finger or a tail.

Nah I don't mean like that. I just mean in the way the military approaches things like physical fitness standards for each gender right now. Combining that with the recent introduction of females to formerly male-only occupational specialties, to me, makes this transgender issue something that isn't even close to being tackled appropriately right now.

The issue with that is, there will never be an appropriate time.
