i've come to terms with the fact that computers seem like magic to some people. also, for others who are more savvy, they may not have the tools or the time. i actually quoted him $50 off the top of my head, but I didn't have a $10 on me for change and he just shrugged it off.

it's just like car repairs - i know how to replace my worn out suspension bushings, but i don't have access to a lift or quality tools. if i can find a mechanic to do it for me at a good rate, i'll jump on it

the only ISO for win10 that i had was old. 30 minutes to install it, another 30 to track down a few drivers, and then the rest of the time spent on Windows Updates. the big service pack-style ones

If its anything like my reformats/resets most of said time is the computer just loading and installing.

TLDR you dont actually DO much, most of it is just waiting.

if you can convince somebody to pay you for computer work, good for you.

the worst thing is doing something time consuming since you just KNOW it won't be the last time they come around when their comp acts up or they need something because "you're the computer guy".

most of the time windows 10 updates finds all of the drivers automatically, so you might have wasted your time (i've noticed it isn't exactly the best for video card drivers but everything else usually gets found).

and windows 10 will also format itself without using an ISO (as long as it can boot into the system repair screen), so it wouldn't need any drivers.

but anyway the 2 computer places i've worked at charged 90 and 130 (the latter being Staples), but we did back up the data for free. If someone had1tb worth of porn and pirated movies/tv shows then it would take the longest.

well as long as it boots to windows (or the 'advanced recovery' screen) you can restore it to windows 10 without the bloatware.

I need more people to call me for computer work. It used to happen all of the time, but then you have 5 family members tell you they need their computers looked at at Easter dinner and you forget to call them and no one calls you anymore.

I just switched jobs which means I'm not gonna get paid for another 3 weeks so I need money. Once I start to get paid I'm straight.

Yeah he did good, but he coulda potentially did it faster with the shit built into windows now.

Used to be my job too. I used to tell people "I watch blue bars go across the screen" for a living.

Now it is breaking down laptops, replacing a MB or a base or bezel, and putting it back together, over and over (for a school system).

It is a cool job as I can listen to podcasts and shit but as I get older my hands are getting to where the are hurting all of the time and I'm gonna burn a hole through my stomach with Aleve and aspirin. I'm probably gonna start doing on-site stuff soon which won't be nearly as taxing, but damn I have arthritis or tendinitis now for some reason and running a laptop repair assembly line is basically killing my fingers to where percocet can't even relieve them.
