I went downtown for the festivities today because I like being part of large gatherings but I am just getting so disillusioned with this whole "play dress-up and sing propaganda songs and have state sanctioned fun" thing everybody just is okay with. these people are not really expressing anything at all.

I wasn't attending as a cop, so I don't deserve that title

Has anyone ever seen the pledge you have to make in order to become a Canadian citizen? You have to pledge allegiance to the "queen of Canada". It's terrible

It always struck me as a bit weird that Americans pledge allegiance to a piece of fabric. At least pledging allegiance to a monarch makes logical sense.

Kill 100 men: You are a hero. Kill 10,000 men, you are a conqueror!

And to the republic for which it stands

Given your current president, and the historical fact that Canada exists as a stark "fuck you" to the US from England, yeah, we actually have a lot to celebrate right now.

It's not pledging to a "piece of fabric", it's pledging to everything the flag stands for and represents. Every single nation has a flag and every single one honors and respects them. It's not just a "MERICA thing".
