Reading this article at Waypoint reminded me of that I'm still afraid of the water and everything that's inside of it

As a child it scared the hell out of me. The screech of Ecco I think is what did it. And the sudden speed and terror that you can get stunlocked and die as Ecco is wailing in pain.

That is a great article that perfectly sums up one of the most inexplicably atmospheric games ever

I wouldn't say it straight up terrified me, but it is often creepy.

I was probably eight or nine when I first played through it and that soundtrack just really did a number on me

I'm not sure that I ever ended up beating either game (at least I think there was just the two)

Five, actually, although two were edutainment things and so don't count (and one of those was for the Sega Pico, so counts even less).

Ignoring the Ecco Jr. games though, you're missing Ecco: Defender of the Future, which was a reboot that had nothing to do with the previous storyline (it was penned by sci-fi writer David Brin, and based on (rather dismissive) comments he made later, it appears he wasn't even aware there was a previous storyline), but still had a dolphin travelling through time to fight aliens. It was for Dreamcast, with a later PS2 port, and was pretty good, but also very hard and scary.

I was a man when I played Ecco defender of the future so it didn't have the same effect on me as the first game

Read a similar article on it a while back, it truly is a survival horror game in spirit.

Played the hell out of Ecco as a kid and I've always had a completely irrational fear of swimming with fish. It all makes sense now.

I played it a friend's house and never got past like the first level. But one of my good friends has often told me the game is not what folks think it is. I uh.

I see his point now.

Huh. My sister and I used to rent the first Ecco game a lot. It's one of the very few games that I'm sure I played a lot in childhood but don't really remember anything about it at all. Maybe my kid brain blocked out a bunch of awful memories. I'll need to watch a playthrough of it or something.

Random other thought: This reminded me of a Little Mermaid game we played on the Genesis.

but really it's the whole soundtrack. Even the title screen before I knew anything about the game I thought it was creepy and something was off
