it's all a matter of what they said and the defense they're using. it ain't trump that did that, it's CNN themselves who got enough rope.




they could just say that they're keeping it private because he's a private citizen but they don't do that. they very directly just give you four terms of personal behavior that he should have, or else. they could have backpedaled on that but the only thing they've really done there are 1) use lawyering language of "we didn't speak to him," which pleasantly ignores that they contacted him on multiple personal platforms the day before, and 2) say that there was just no agreement made to keep it private. ...which doesn't help the concern people have.

It's funny how you pick and choose the parts of the article you use to accuse a major news outlet of blackmail and intimidation. The "he is a private citizen" part of the article far outweighs the four bullet points you use to bolster your argument. The non-demonizing explanation would be that, in doing all of those things, it's clear he doesn't want to be a public figure and as such, CNN sees no reason to unveil the name of a private citizen. Should he happen to continue a pattern of bringing attention to himself, then the "private" part of "private citizen" becomes less applicable.

Basically, they're saying that if he does something in the future that is newsworthy, they will hold him to the same standards as a public figure, because he has made himself a public figure. That's not threatening. That's just treating him like they would any public figure.

the four bullet points are what they list directly after that sentence. had they stopped at just that, without stating these things of personal behavior, people wouldn't be riled up nearly as much. if he says he's not sorry that's not newsworthy, if he says he's not remorseful that's not newsworthy, if he insults somebody online, that's not newsworthy. so why are these terms they specifically stated? nobody would have any beef if the argument was "if he becomes a public figure we'll discuss more specific details about his identity." that's just not what they said. it's a very kiss the ring style of conditions they gave him.

And for the record, I don't take any of Trump's asinine comments about the media seriously, and I certainly wouldn't call them fake news. There's a lot of dishonest news, and that's the key difference. I feel this entire situation is extremely sketchy and the way in which CNN keeps framing and the language they are using doesn't sit right with me.

Alternatively, while some people are always extremely skeptical of the media, I feel like there's a lot of people who don't question the media at all which is also extremely harmful. The truth is usually somewhere in the middle, but when CNN is crying and pitching a fit about how threatened they feel about a wrestling meme, it's very hard to give them the benefit of a doubt here.

I haven't read about this incident yet but CNN has been delivering terrible, fact-short news coverage for years. The day I saw that CNN's front page had 4 or 5 headlines about what various US politicians (some not even in office) were saying about Russia's invasion of Crimea and zero headlines about said invasion itself was when I realized they were worse than Fox News.

Yeah, I think most of us agree that CNN is dumb for numerous reasons with regards to this story. One, making the CNN wrestling gif a story in the first place. Two, actively tracking down the gif creator for comment on this non-story. Three, writing a very poorly-worded article that allows intellectually dishonest people to easily latch onto the "CNN blackmailed this poor victim" narrative.

The problem is the people dragging the story to the far right. Deliberately misinterpreting an article to make CNN (and in their mind, ALL liberals by proxy) appear malicious rather than just dumb.
