Current Events > Question for pet owners on CE: How would you react if a cop shot your dog?

Two cops, one of whom looks a little bit like Levar Burton, approach your home and knock on the door. Saying they need to ask you some routine questions

When you open the door your dog perks up and gets over-excited. S/he pelts frantically towards them and leaps up to play. The surprised cop gets concerned for their life and at the spur of the moment instinctually pulls out their gun and shoots the dog.

Your dog falls to the floor, whimpers, whines, shakes for a little while then passes away. The cop then says they had no choice the dog tried to attack them.



Turns out the enquirey was over a co-worker of yours who disappeared and then was found dead under suspcious circumstances so the cops were on edge.

OR cat if applicable.

What would you do? How would you react?

I'd find it somewhat surprising since my dog is a toy breed and doesn't pose any threat...

Then I'd probably yell something like "The fuck?" real loud.

Probably be sad and try and sue the department or post online to make money.

I have a big dog and I'd understand there fear. That's why I'd have put her in the crate before opening the door.

I guess there's a slight possibility I swing on the cop but I think i have better self control than that.

I have two puppies that weigh 5 pounds each. I'd be devastated, but I wouldn't do anything stupid because I don't want to die either.

But...all these stories about dogs getting shot have me where I'd put them up before I open the door for a cop.

I don't have a dog, but if I did, that cop would be in the hospital for sure. Maybe I'd be dead too, and I wouldn't care.

My dog wouldn't do that.

But assuming I don't just lose it and shoot him with his own gun,. I'd play it up to the media, the internet, everywhere.

If I saw cops at the door, I'd put the dogs in their cages before opening the door. If they shot the dog inside the cage, I'd be pissed off. Would contact a news agency, complain to their superiors and talk to a lawyer to see if they think I'd have a reasonable chance of successfully suing the law enforcement agency responsible.

Now ive always wondered how my dogs would react in a SWATed scenario. Not sure if they'd fight or flight...Ive seen them do both

My doggo is the type to get excited whenever someone is at the front door and always greets visitors, and I'd never expect any sort of stranger to rock up on my front door really, it's always friends or family (who know my dog). In a perfect world, I'd understand where the cop is coming from, sorta. Being rushed by a dog suddenly is scary shit. But in the real world? Rocking up to MY DOORSTEP and shooting my dog in his own home when he's just being friendly? I'd probably have a mental shutdown.

Yeah, no. Once again, I am not the one rejecting reality. You are not allowed to decide what actions I would have taken. If I say my dogs would have been in their cages, then you need to accept that they'd be in their cages.

MMm IDK. TBH my cat is very, very dear to me, not sure how I'd react outside of cursing at the idiot cop who shot a feline, saying he or she is fucked, cause I'ma make sure they lose their job... Perhaps see if I could sue.
