It's not an "excuse", as it does not excuse it, but it clearly is a contributing environmental factor to a lot of crime.

People need money, one way or another.

Suppose you do want to kill someone. Since one is "I wanted to" an excuse?

well, imagine that you're poor and homeless and starving to death and you see a fellow hobo on the streets with a huge hunk of cheese all to himself. Is it hard to imagine how that primal hunger would make you want to kill that man for the cheese?

Poverty entices people to enter gangs and the drug trade. Since the drug trade is underground they can't use the legal system to resolve disputes which leaves violence the only means.

People grew up much poorer than they do now. And without foodstamps, free housing, heat, air conditioning, etc.

People just use it as a scapegoat now. Not to mention, there are plenty of poor people today who work multiple jobs to get by without going around committing murder and other crimes.
