After finishing Toradora I needed a rollercoaster non-supernatural anime to balance my life a bit. Watched the first episode, unfortunately my left earphone busted so I'm not gonna watch any more til I can use my speakers.

So far it seems like what I'm after. Seems like it'll be more dramatic than Toradora, but otherwise they seem similar enough. I do have one major gripe, and that's the animation shift during comedic parts. The show is fucking beautiful, I love the art style and the animation is like a Ghibili TV show. The color contrasts are amazing, and it works to evoke emotion.

But those fucking comedic parts shit all over the beautiful art and make it seem like another generic (junior) high school romcom.

Toradora was at least subtle about the art change, or didn't change at all. This, though. This is way too obnoxious. Please, please tell me this lets up. I never liked that part of anime, but here it's so much worse because the art is otherwise amazing. It's like someone handed me a nice steak with wine, then proceeded to defecate all over it.

Regardless I'll keep on watching and post my opinions/reactions.

I mean, lets put it this way: I actually loved the Festival arc and consider it my favorite part of Toradora. I will accept having a shit taste over that.

The OT board seems to be salty about Your Lie in April, but eh, fuck 'em.

That's not good for me, I can't handle mood whiplash. It's actually one of the major reasons I couldn't get into FMA:B.

The mood whiplash is admittedly a bit much but it tends to tone itself down a little much. Personally the suddenness helps the humor a little but that's me.

I really liked Toradora but Your Lie in April was trashy with the mood whiplash and the seriousness and melodrama that came with the story

Can confirm, OT is really the worst social board I've ever come across. I guess it's to be expected when you create a community of anime nerds, though. It's a real concentration of socially dysfunctional human beings getting elitist over what is largely kids cartoons.

Toradora was entertaining. Your Lie in April I'm not too sure about yet, seems a little serious.

The comedic abuse was kinda fucked up considering the dramatic abuse from his mom but Japan loves reusing the same jokes over and over

Your Lie In April is pretty good, but I'd probably recommend spacing out your episodes rather than binging the whole show.

There's a point in the last quarter of the show where this uplifting sort of jingle happens, the same part that plays before the show's biggest moments, and I realized how sick I was of hearing it and how now I knew something was being telegraphed to be really good or dramatic. Kind of ruined my enjoyment of the last quarter of the show.

It's held up as this great dramatic masterpiece, and it certainly is good. But IMO, Golden Time was a bit more solid with its gut punches. After Your Lie In April and maybe one more palate cleanser (maybe check out Kimi Ni Todoke?), I would totally recommend Golden Time.

Watched episode 2, that fucking mood whiplash during the last scene got to me. I don't know if I can do it. The whole episode was great, and ramping up to that moment, then it gets thrown out the window.

I'll give it a few more episodes, because I like it, but if I don't become numb to the whiplash I dunno if I can take it.

Also, Golden Time is going onto my To Watch list. I might take a short break after YLIA if I stick to it, but Golden Time seems interesting enough to give it a watch.

I remember adding Golden Time to my list but cause I was told it was a romance anime that didn't take place in high school and that was already a big enough draw.

It's not perfect, but IMO it gets better as it goes along. I'd say that if Golden Time starts rubbing you the wrong way, watch until the end of the first cour before deciding to drop it.

Yeah that is what makes it enticing. The closest thing to that I've seen is Tatami Galaxy, and that was amazing. If Golden Time is similar to Tatami Galaxy minus the surrealism with more focus on the romance, I'd be totally fine.

Watched ep 3 and 4 of YLIA. 3 was a bit of a slog, but 4. Holy shit, 4. THAT is the episode that has reeled me in. The scene where Kousei falls apart and going underwater to show how mute the piano became was probably the best scene I've seen in anime in quite a while. Plus the ending of the episode confirmed what I expected from episode 3.

Also I think I've been spoiled as to a certain character's fate, thanks to Serperior's post. Didn't really read the rest of the message after the spoiler, should really put that disclaimer up front dude.

Episode 5 has one of my favourite scenes and music in the series. It's not a massive spoiler or anything but the scene on the bridge.

Are you watching dub or sub?

I think my only real criticism of the dub is how idioms are used a whole hell of a lot but overall I enjoyed it. Watched it probably twice dub and sub each.

Erica Lindbeck does a good job as Kaori.

Yeah the idioms are a bit overused and it feels weird, but my headcannon is chalking it up to weirdo Junior High Schoolers.

I enjoyed the bridge scene in ep 5, brought back the beautiful art and animation. Plus, no mood whiplash to stall the train, albeit it was an uplifting scene in the first place.

Right now I'm guessing there's gonna be a Kousei-Kaori-Tsubaki love triangle while Watari acts as a player/bro and the high schooler swoons over Tsubaki. Not looking forward to a confrontation between Kousei and Watari.

I can see ep 5 being the "start" and the rest of it being like a prologue. They could've made the first 5 episodes its own series/OVA if they cut out some stuff and I would be thoroughly happy. Like I don't know if they can top episodes 4 & 5. At this point it looks like it's turning into "Kousei vs Bitter Pissants" with some love triangle stuff going on. Like if this next arc is more about Kousei & Kaori's relationship building I'd be cool with it. Not so interested in actual competition.

For fear of saying too much, it's a series that is very much focused on the relationship between Kousei and Kaori.

It's a music themed romantic comedy/drama. No action at all though there are still emotional surprising turns. I'm not sure if you would like that though.
