This. It's purely psychological. If you had it sitting in the same container or even pan as meat but they believe that it's never come into contact with meat then they're going to eat it happily.
Conversely, if it had never touched meat and they were enjoying it, if you told them it had touched meat or the utensils used to make it were 'contaminated' then they'll start freaking out and saying how gross it tastes. etc.
I've seen it multiple times and I no longer bother with them, I just tell them it's completely meat free in any case and get some peace and quiet from them while we eat.
All this thread tells me is that I should start looking for new friends to replace the vegans I'm about to never call again.
