Not racist at all. I'm black and I hate when they turn random characters black just to be "inclusive". Just make new black characters

That said. This is not Mary Jay. It's a new character, like pretty much all of them in the movie. It's a different universe, so it's cool.

But when they make new characters then people go, "why did they make this new character? Where is so and so from the comics." Of course what homecoming did was worse as it made new characters and called them comic book characters.

Not always.

If it's a good character then people will except it. If it's Just a racialzed character then they probably would have that reaction

But personally, I don't care if Mary Jay is in it or not. I honestly think she's a dumb bitch (especially Gwyneth Paltrows version). A fresh new character/love interest is welcome

Her name is Mary Jane. And she was never played by Gwenyth Paltrow

My bad

I meant Kristen Dunst

I was think of Gwyneth for whatever reason

I personally don't mind the change in skin tone, but I would like to see dyed red hair. Zendaya could make an awesome MJ if they'd let her be like the comic character rather than the someone who belongs in a Breakfast Club remake.

It's pretty obvious that they wanted her to start off as a plain person who Peter didn't really notice at first and then have her improve her looks (and maybe dye her hair) and become more similar to the MJ we're all familiar with

The people behind the movie already said she isn't Mary Jane though. Her friends call her M.J. That's it. If anything it's a nod to the comics, not changing the character.

http://collider.com/spider-man-homecoming-zendaya-mj-explained/

Kevin Feige says it in more than one interview. She's a new character named Michelle. The whole M.J. thing is a nod to the relationship Peter traditionally has with Mary Jane in the comics.

Not at all.

Wanting every character to remain their original ethnicity is an unrealistic expectation, but wanting someone to keep their signature look is okay.

Captain America could be lean muscle or her could be bulky. It wouldn't make a difference either way. But if the Incredible Hulk was built like Bruce Lee and shorter than the other Avengers members, it wouldn't matter if he retained his superior strength or not, a lot of people would be pissed at the change and justifiably so.

Calling her MJ means that she's meant to be Mary Jane Watson. It'd be like if Batman had a muscular alien friend called Supe and the director tried to handwave it as being totally not Superman. You know the next film is going to more or less reaffirm that she is Mary Jane Watson.

I suppose they did. But they never did anything like, say, turning the guy in the rhino costume into the guy in the rhino robot. Some of the Ultimate decisions are as bad as giving Bruce Wayne a baseball bat and turning him into the guy from Walking Tall.

They called her Michelle the whole movie?

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they just added the MJ bit at the end just because of all the "controversy" since Marvel has always stood by saying she was playing Michelle and no one believed them...

Either way, she's clearly NOT playing Mary Jane Watson so why does it matter if she doesn't LOOK like Mary Jane Watson?

Calling him James instead of Jimmy isn't any more of a leap than making MJ stand for Michelle Jones rather than Mary Jane. I know that "Jimmy" might have some negative connotations, but they still made the choice to change the name.

Also, the dude goes from being the geeky character that nerds are supposed to identify with to being the sexy one. Seriously, that dude's better looking than the chick that plays Supergirl.

I'd say the changes have a lot more in common with one another than a simple change in ethnicity.

It is.

Both characters are named James. One just doesn't go by the nickname anymore. They also both have the same story (photographers and co worker of Clark, and Superman's best friend).

Mary Jane was the niece of Peter's next door neighbor. She didn't even go to the same school when Peter was a Sophmore.

Michelle doesn't have the same story. Or name. Or fit the same role. Or have the same attitude. Or have anything to do with Mary Jane in any way, shape or form.
