It seems every channel complains about Youtube's monetization policy. Some of these youtubers go ahead and upend their lives just because of the Youtube income. Then when the income isn't coming they want to complain and beg for donations.

Some of these youtubers just sit around and talk about Skyrim mods all day, did they not see the Youtube bubble bursting eventually?

Fuck me to tears. I'd be a fucking quasi-millionaire if I got paid to play videogames all day long. I play the OG games better than a number of LPers.

I'm too obsolete to make money talking about new shit.

Hardly, it's just more cost-cutting.

Yeah but first you have to be likable.

They all do it because it's the new trend and scheme. Cry about YouTube. It becomes drama. The kids watch and like. Then they can pitch their patreon and say things like "i don't know if I can keep bringing you guys such amazing content. If you don't want my channel to fail please donate to my patreon!"...extra money both ways.

There's a difference between "Upper middle class wage" and "Making enough to not take a loss".

Being a successful let's player almost never has anything to do with how good you are at a game, it's simply about your personality, commentary, and being likable.
Nobody watches let's players just because they're pretty good at games, the only way people will watch you based on skill alone is if you're literally one of the best in the world, like a professional e sports player or something.

That's a very backwards way to go about it.

Soooo... you get into an industry that is 90% having people like you (streaming and LP) without being liked by a lot of people?

You develop a following based on your personality without appealing to people and being likable?

Then, after you develop your following, you start to be likable? What's the point of being likable if you have your following without it?

Unless you think being name dropped by a bigger YT/Twitch personality is a requirement to start making appealing content and selling your personality, rather than the other way around.

Actually....that description is pretty accurate. Too bad personality is not one of my strong points. There isn't much that brings on my personality anymore.

YouTube definitely seems like it's heading for a 2000-era tech bubble burst. I think advertisers are going to wise up that YouTube's core audience is 9 to 17, and advertising on the platform is pointless.

But hell, when LeafIsHere is reportedly sitting on 2 million dollars in his active checking account (all for making the crapiest content on the internet), then who in their right mind wouldn't be trying to make it on YouTube right now?

Is Google/YouTube taking a bigger cut of the ad revenue now than in years' past (aka scamming content creators)? Or is it something else?

There are just less ads to go around due to recent policy changes.

The biggest channels that have actual contacts at YT are now fine. Most channels that were already established have returned to their old revenue streams.

The channel TC is talking about is clearly MxR, who is probably just being screwed by having Machinima represent him as an MCN. Since it's really Machinima that is in charge of his YT relations, MxR is being screwed by having the majority of his videos demonetized and has made two vlogs about it and mentioned it in a couple videos.

Machinima is known for being both incompetent and dishonest, and frequently screws over youtubers of all kinds. Odds are they are the problem, rather than the nature of the content he is creating.

After the WSJ called PewDiePie a Nazi they overhauled their monetization system and a bunch of content creators have lost monetization all together.

The problem with any of these platforms is that they're liable to shut down or demonetize unexpectedly.

A few years before the big ad issue a lot of gaming youtubers started to move to Twitch. Probably because 1) Twitch is easier, especially if you already have an audience and have a decent streaming personality and 2) you can make a lot of money on Twitch with donations these days.

You really need to diversify, or you get screwed like MxR when one platform decides they won't pay you anymore.

There's several factors in play...

1. Advertisers are pulling out. This is for a variety of different reasons including not being able to control what videos their ads are placed on and the realization that Youtube's core audience skews absurdly young.

2. Youtube is changing things behind the scenes and placing different YouTubers into different content brackets. This affects what ads get placed on your videos. Sometimes it means no ads on your videos.

3. Something is up with the algorithm. There's definitely something going on with the recommended videos and the trending page. Some people's videos are just being excluded and some weird shit is getting promoted. So far nobody has found a concrete answer.

4. Ad Blockers are become more wide spread, to the point that it's a real, serious crisis for most sites.

5. Some YouTubers are in serious debt because they're idiots who struck gold. There was that one guy who made all those videos about "I'm going to lose my house!" But it turns out that it was his 2nd house that he couldn't afford to pay off.

No.

There's a guy who started finding obscure, extremist videos that were monetized. Things like racist or ISIS propaganda, since sometimes they could get away with having ads, as YT wasn't great at making sure they weren't.

He then showed this to many advertisers as a big "problem" with YT that would ruin their brands by association, while just so happening to have patented a system which can find and filter these sorts of extreme videos automatically, which he offered to YT for millions. He convinced advertisers to withdraw from the platform to try to hold YT hostage to sell his technology.

Needless to say, Google went with their own approach.

The guy's name is Eric Feinberg if you're interested in reading more.

No, it's the writers and publishers at the WSJ who okayed that bullshit slam piece just to stir up controversy and get clicks.
