Rivals was pretty bad. The winner was as lopsided as year but with a much less interesting premise and one close match.

Rivals wasn't a very good idea for a contest, but it was a lot easier to care about rivalries than about years. What's the point of a contest where nobody really cares what wins?

And then it turns into..Mario and Link(Yeah I know it's not a team) vs Cloud and Sephiroth
And it can change everything

The hate for rivals is that only a handful of rivalries were worth giving a crap about, and most of the matches were bad.

Red/Blue gave us a great deal more intrigue in rivals than anything gave us in year, I think it's pretty clear cut

There was at least some debate in year pre-contest. Rivals was pretty cut and dry unless you were hopeful or really overthinking the strength of small-time characters. Think it took me all of 10 minutes to fill my bracket out and I was top 10. Year had pretty much no drama, but at least some discussion was kinda interesting.

Villains is the best of the non-traditional contests by a decent margin. Series doesn't get enough crap for being completely predictable and not very interesting.

Hard to decide when nearl every contest the last several years has been bad. Vote totals are so laughable now if Link 80-20'd somebody he would do so with like 10-12k votes instead of 50k+

Definitely years, notable to me for how much of it I failed to note. I've grown to care less about each new contest as the years go by, but at the very least there's usually some buzz when a contest happens. Years....the only thing I can say about it is that it happened some time in the last year, I think?

Years

-Blatantly obvious from the very beginning what was gonna win (1998)
-Round 1 basically being "Which year is the closest to 1998"
-Console releases being completely irrelevant
-Worst picture system

And finally
-Vote totals being so low that it basically proved that GameFAQs is dead and people have moved on to other sites.

I'd literally go with any of the first few over Years. (I don't remember what 2013 Characters was.) Voted Series - I'm pretty sure that's the only contest where there was literally a perfect bracket.

Rivals had a few good matches, but the difference between it and Years is that people didn't expect Years to be a good contest. Rivals was much more of a letdown.

...I don't remember there being much hype for Rivals either, especially once Allen squashed Mario/Sonic and we knew Link/Ganondorf winning was thus inevitable.

The only thing which kept me from voting Rivals is Trainers vs Cloud/Seph, which is one the greatest match of all time. I also remember Trainers beating Samus was a surprise to me.

Trainers blowing stuff to pieces was more interesting than anything Years gave us, too. Unexpected domination can honestly be pretty exciting, too.

I remember being pretty proud of myself for correctly predicting that Trainers would be one of the few entrants to get a significant rivalry boost beyond some sort of combined character strength. I guess that was kind of similar to the depth/anchor theories in years, but I didn't really feel clever for correctly predicting depth in the latter.
