I've heard it that it was meant Zenkai. Others just believe that it is the last series Toriyama planned, so Z would be a random addition as the last letter in the alphabet. Last Series-Last Letter.

The z is a mistake. During production for the second Dragonball series, the name was Dragonball 2. However, someone made the 2 look like a z, so Akira Toriyama just went with Dragonball Z. This has been confirmed by the Dragonball staff.
*** The Z in Dragon Ball stands for Zenkai. Zenkai in Japanese means Last Time. This was meant for the ending of the Dragon Ball series altogether. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

It's funny because in the show sometimes the narrator will call them the Z fighters. What would he have called them before the change? The 2 fighters?
